Gold quarter stater, some wear, and abrasion on the obverse, Hobbs 1638. This type is not recorded in Van Arsdell; there are five in the BM including that illustrated in Hobbs all from Essendon, Herts and another six on the Celtic Coin Index (CCI 930963, 941350, 980498 from Watford, Tring and Bishops Stortford; 962670, 971014, 980125 unlocated). The type is related to Whaddon Chase and Tasciovanus types, distribution so far is Hertforshire (but Bishops Stortford eg noted as possibly from Essex, so this example is the most easterly so far but within the Catuvellauni/Trinovantes area.

CURATOR'S REPORT Description of find Gold fragment, probably from a small item of jewellery, such as an ear-ring or a pendant. The piece is triangular with distinctive volutes forming turned back wings, and terminates in a small polygonal block. This originally joined with another element, now broken, as is the other end, which is broken and damaged.

A gold finger ring of uncertain date. It has a plain circular band that is sub-circular in section with a flat inner edge. The inner edge has several indentations and pock marks, presumably caused during production, but apparently no maker's marks or hallmarks. The ring measures 17.36mm in internal diameter, 22.84mm in external diameter, and weighs 8.58g. This plain gold ring is a beach find from close to a known Roman site. Description: A complete gold finger ring of unknown date. The hoop is simply comprised of a three strands of gold wire plaited into a strip and then joined at one side. The outer face of the hoop has then been filed smooth leaving the central part of the plait still visible. Treasure report from J Rudoe: A complete gold posy ring with relatively thick, circular D-shaped hoop. The exterior surface of the hoop is undecorated, but has been folded inwards on one side due to post-depositional damage. The interior face of the hoop has an incised inscription that reads 'God above increas our love', followed by two identical maker's marks that consist of the letters F C within a shield that has a zig-zag top and bilobate base. Nicholas Rhodes (Secretary General of the Oriental Numismatic Society; pers. comm. via John Naylor PAS Finds Advisor) notes that this is one of the more common Acenese gold coins and should have a gold fineness of about 60%, it is also a little under the standard weight for this issue of 0.59g.

Description: A medieval gold mount. The mount is octagonal in shape and has a central setting, now distorted, which contains a reddish stone, probably a garnet, the upper surface of which is flat and polished. Surrounding this central setting there is a beaded border. On the reverse are two small piercings, presumably the means of attaching this mount to another component, perhaps the hoop of a finger ring or the frame of a brooch.

Description: A gold and garnet mount of probable 7th century date. The mount is circular in shape and consists of a circular cabochon garnet mounted onto separate gold sheet back plates. An inner back plate can be seen through an irregular hole in the centre of the outer one. Soldered to the outer back plate is the retaining collar for the garnet, which has a double filigree border or trim, the outer filigree being slightly larger than the inner one.

Description: A small gold terminal or mount which could possibly be Anglo-Saxon in date. It is cylindrical in shape and hollow, it is now distorted due to damage and the inside is filled with dirt. The gold cylinder is decorated with delicate filigree, plain strands are attached to the upper and lower edges. The pin is complete and curves downwards whilst tapering gently in width towards its terminal end, it is D-shaped in section, being flat underneath.
