Two fragments of an incomplete gilded copper alloy mount of probable medieval or post-medieval date. It consists of an elongated rectangular strip, becoming thinner towards the complete end, which is bent at a right-angle (whether deliberately or not is not clear), its tip detached and found separately. The detatched tip has a rounded outer end and is pierced with a small circular hole. The outer surface is gilded, while the reverse is more roughly finished. Description: An incomplete gold Medieval quatrefoil frame brooch, dating to AD 1300-1450. It is half of the original quatrefoil frame, which has a sub-rectangular cross section and a double stepped outer edge. On one end there is the broken constriction for the missing pin. The front face is decorated with four cast raised inward facing human heads; the heads are even-spaced and are placed on the inner cusps and on the most outer part of the curved frame. A gold hammered probable Western European imitation of a gold Venetian ducat dating to the later Medieval period, probably c. 1400-1550. The prototype could not be accurately ascertained, though the crude non-sensical legends that in places are retrograte would infer that this is an imitation rather than an official issue. The coin is folded over in what appears to be post-depositional damage, one corner also being partly torn.
