An ornamental link from a necklace, bracelet or earring? Made of rectangular section gold wire, a teardrop shape outline contains four pieces forming curvilinear shapes and has a small loop (both showing signs of wear) at each end. Length 18 mm, wires 0.8 by 0.3mm. The craftsmanship is poor for precious metal work. Reported under the Treasure Act 1996. Catherine Johns (British Museum) adds in her report: "A single decorative gold necklace link formed out of square-sectioned wire, which would have formed a spacer between glass or hardstone beads. Date: 1st to mid 3rd century AD". X-ray…

Unidentified jewellery element made of pale gold. It appears complete, and might perhaps have been a decorative cap. It is sub-triangular or heart-shaped, and now rather crushed. Originally at least 6.5 mm thick, its sides have two facets of uneven depth, both decorated with delicate engraved scrolled motifs. On the wider facet of the angle these motifs are in zigzag fields, and on the other facet they are confined within a narrow band which narrows further towards the apex of the heart or triangle. The face next to the wider facet is better preserved and has a raised heart-shaped…

Description: A small fragment of sheet gold, roughly rectangular in surviving shape and now distorted and folded, all edges are incomplete due to old breaks apart from one, which has a thickened rim. The outer face of the fragment is decorated immediately below the thickened rim with a transverse row of punched crescent shapes, below these there are four transverse grooves, there is then a row of backwards S-shaped motifs. Finally beneath these there are more transverse grooves, which continue beyond the incomplete edges of the fragment. Discussion: The exact function of this fr…

A complete gold object of uncertain date, but possibly Iron Age or early Roman. It consists a length of thick gold wire (now rather twisted and distorted) of circular section with a knopped globular terminal at each end. Identification is uncertain, although it is likely to be an item of personal adornment such as a bracelet. The original length/diameter of the object is uncertain due to heavy distortion but has been estimated at 130mm; the terminals are c. 2.66mm in diameter and the midpoint of the wire 1.42mm thick. It weighs 3.96g. Although this object is difficult to par…

Description:  A complete Bronze Age gold item of jewellery dating to circa 2,300-800 BC. Now flattened and squashed, the piece is comprised of a cylindrical piece of sheet metal folded in on itself multiple times. The join is overlapping rather than soldered. The external face of the object is decorated with incised horizontal grooves running around the circumference. They cover the entire length of the piece. Length: 15.7mm; Width: 5.6mm; Thickness: 2.4mm; Weight: 0.60g. Discussion: The piece was likely used as an item of jewellery most likely a bead. It is similar to ot…
