Description: An irregular sub-rectangular fragment of 'hack' gold, cut on its upper and lower edges, curving slightly in plan and demonstrating some faceting to its upper face. Date: c. 1500 BC-1800 AD Dimensions: The fragment measures 10.82mm down its longest axis, 8.61mm wide by 1.27mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 1.05g. Discussion: A number of similar gold fragments have been recorded on the PAS database via the Treasure Act, including LANCUM-681051 and SWYOR-784244. Though this piece was found in an area of high Early-Medieval (Early/Middle Anglo-Saxon) activity, i…

Description: A fragment of a possible silver early medieval ingot or metal working debris. It has one flattened triangular terminal and then an oval-sectioned shaft before old breaks. Date: 500-1000 Dimensions: Length: 11.02mm, width 6.01mm. Discussion: It has been suggested that ingots were used as bullion but M Blackburn (Treasure Annual Report 2005/6, 84) has suggested that in Southern England, where there was an established Anglo-Saxon coinage, it seems more likely that they were used for casting into items such as jewellery. Interestingly other small silver ingot…

Description: A complete early medieval ingot/hack silver fragment. It is semi-circular in cross-section. Each end has an inwards curving surface with a rough break towards the base suggesting that the object was part of a longer rod with notches cut into it originally, which was then cut into segments. There appears to be a series of shallow transverse testing nicks on the upper surface. Dimensions: 33.75mm in length and 7.11mm in width, 4.71mm in thickness, 5.61g in weight. Description: A silver possible early medieval, Viking Age ingot. The ingot is sub-rectangular in shape with tapering rounded terminals. It has been cast in a shallow mould, possibly sandstone as there is a stipple pattern on the lower surface. The ingot appears to have some probable hammer marks on both faces and the terminals, the terminals consequently appear faceted. The upper surface is also scratched, perhaps unintentional damage due to being scraped in the soil, and has one possibly more deliberate deeper mark.

A solid cast silver ingot of possible Early Medieval/Viking date. The ingot is oval in shape with rounded terminal ends. The upper and lower faces have been flattened and the edges are slightly faceted to give an almost pointed oval shaped section. The surfaces are slightly pitted and blackened in places and many horizontal striations are visible, perhaps the result of the production process or alternatively due to post-depositional damage. This ingot measures 23.05mm in length, 9.80mm in width, 5.40mm in thickness, and weighs 7.46g. Several simple cast silver ingots such a…

Silver cast probably Viking Age ingot, of sub-rectangular form with rounded terminals. The upper face is rounded and the underside flatter and rough, probably due to casting in an open mould. The ingot appears to have been deliberately worked with tiny hammer marks on the surfaces giving it a faceted appearance. There are also some deeper longer indentations, which may be due to damage from being scraped in the soil.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy rectangular cross-sectioned bar measuring 62.99mm in length, 8.4mm in width and 6.58mm in thickness it is 22.31g in weight. One face of the bar has been hammered and the indentations made can be clearly seen. This is reminiscent of the hammering on Viking Age ingots, this object could therefore possibly be an ingot and perhaps of Viking date, however, the identification remains uncertain.

A copper-alloy possible Viking Age ingot with one pierced terminal. It measures 37.3mm in length, 16.5mm in width and 5.5mm in thickness. Its sides are rounded and one face flat and has transverse lines aross it, presumably created by hammering, although they seem narrow and perhaps more like cut or chisel marks, the other is slightly convex and the surface is smooth but pitted from the casting process. Copper-alloy Viking ingots, with transverse hammer marks on one face but without piercings are known from Saham Toney, Cotessey and Congham, Norfolk (Geake 2001, 242-243, fig 2, b). …

Potential find of Treasure: a Viking silver ingot, Norfolk Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the ingot of 99%; it weighs 62.38 grams. The ingot is of broad slug-like shape, of plano-convex section with a slight lip around the edges of the convex face; length, 49 mm. The convex face has been partly flattened by transverse hammering with a rounded rectangular-sectioned tool giving it a corrugated appearance. Some of the indentations overlap. The long sides and narrower end are vertically ribbed by similar hammering. Th…
