An incomplete Roman Headstud bow brooch of 1st to early 3rd century date. The fragment is of the bow and catchplate.  The bow is rectangular in shape and narrows towards the foot, which then widens at the base. There are three transverse lines across the foot of the bow. The front is decorated with central lozenges and triangular shapes on either side, creating an intersecting pattern. There is none of the original enamel remaining; the object is brown in colour and a green patina has developed on the raised decoration. The fragment has been distorted, resulting in a slightly S-s…

A near complete Roman copper alloy hinged Hod Hill type E brooch dating to the period c. AD 40 - 60. Only the pin is missing. The head of the brooch projects backwards in a sub-rectangular plate which has been rolled forwards around a (possibly copper alloy) axis bar. The head survives to a width of 16.6mm and is 3.1mm thick where it contains the axis bar. A slot has subsequently been cut into the reverse of the head to accommodate the pin which is missing. The bow is D-shaped in cross section with a convex front and flat back and curved in profile. It first …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A short section of a Roman copper alloy bracelet that has been cut and bent into a finger ring dating to c. AD 250-450. The object is formed of a strip of copper alloy. The strip is sub-rectangular in cross section with slightly rounded edges. This strip has been bent into a now mostly circular hoop that overlaps slightly. Both ends appear to be old breaks which suggests the object to be reused, most likely from a bracelet. Decoration on the exterior is hard to determine. It has an external diameter of 18.6 mm, an internal diameter of 14.7 mm. The finger ring is 4…

Object type: HOARD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
In 2012 a Middle Bronze Age hoard was discovered while metal detecting on cultivated land. The find consists of 41 copper alloy objects split across two deposits or concentrations of finds, with a small number of finds found a short distance away. All the objects are of a similar typo-chronology and are likely to represent a single hoard comprised of 31 'ornaments', 8 'tools' and 4 'other' or unidentified objects. The artefacts were recovered by the finders from two deposits in close proximity (c.2-3m apart), with two pits subsequently identified by a local amateur archaeology grou…
