A baluster shaped unidentified object of probably Post medieval date, AD 1700 - 1900. It has an iron core, and an outer of a grey, grainy material that can be scratched with a finger nail, and leaves a streak on paper (possibly a burnt ceramic or organic material). Object type: CANNON BALL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete iron cannon ball of Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1500 - 1700. The cannon ball is spherical with an irregular corroded exterior surface. Due to corrosion it may be smaller than originally made. However, its present diameter and weight may indicate that it was used in a minion cannon. Diameter: 83.8mm (3.29 inches). Weight: 2184g (4.18lbs). The minion was a type of smoothbore cannon used during the Tudor period and into the late 17th century. Cast iron roundshot is rarely found on battlefields, even though records suggest that it was the normal long-range ammunition; cannon ma…

A hand-forged Medieval to Post Medieval wrought iron Axehead dating from about AD 1250 - 1800. The axehead has a near straight top-edge with slight curve to the end of the blade, and a slight bulge at the socket. The underside angles from the heel of the blade to the handle to form a tapering triangular shape. It starts to curve down at the socket, but damage here makes it impossible to suggest the extent of any possible "beard". The socket is triangulat in plan with a thickened butt-end and an overlapping wrought joint. The material appears to be wrought …

Broad period: MODERN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded iron ring of uncertain date. but probably modern, AD 1800 onwards. The ring is a flat, oval disc with a large circular hole in the centre. The width of the hoop varies. The iron appears to be a strip which is shaped to overlap one part of the loop, and finishes with a rounded end, through which there appears to have been a rivet. The ring has a rusty colour corrosion. The ring is 33.8mm in diameter and has a central hole of 16.9mm diameter.  It is 3.5mm thick and weighs 8.0g. The object is likely be modern but its use is uncertain and it is undiagnostic.

County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable corroded piece of cast iron shot from the Post Medieval period, dating from around AD 1500 -1800. It is a corroded spherical solid shot. The small size of about 1.25 inch diameter, and low mass of 0.19 lb suggests use in a small cannon or hand gun such as a Serpentine. See https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/shot/ which notes that iron balls may also have an industrial function in milling and crushing, so this object may not be a cannon ball. The ball is 31.8mm in diameter and weighs 90.15g.

A cast iron cannon ball, and judging from the size and weight, probably for use in a Falconet or similar small artillery weapon, dating from about AD 1500-1900. A Falconet was a small cannon used both on land and in light naval vessels. A number were used during the English Civil War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falconet_(cannon). The iron ball is spherical and corroded. It is 65mm diameter and 992g (2lb, 3oz). Iron balls were also used in various industrial milling operations, such as crushing chalk for whiting, so a modern date cannot be ruled out. https://finds.org.uk/co…

An iron socketed spearhead with a short leaf-shaped blade of unknown date, Iron Age to Medieval, about 600 BC - AD 1500. The object is heavily corroded, and details are obscured. It is uncertain whether it is complete. It has a socket of circular cross-section. This does not appear to be open or wrapped. There is no solid shank between the socket and the blade. This makes it less likely to be Early Medieval. The blade is a narrow pointed oval, and with the corrosion, is quite thick (10.8mm). It is possible that the blade was larger and the thinner outer edges have corroded away. I…

An iron hand bell of probable Early Medieval date, AD 700 - 1100. It has a rounded rectangular opening at the base, and tapers to the top so the two main faces are rectangular and the sides are triangular. There are two broken projections from the top, which were probably part of a ring handle; one can be seen extending into the inside of the bell too. The clapper is missing.
