Roman bracelet; terminal fragment of a Roman, cast copper alloy, snake-headed bracelet. Probably 2nd century. Bracelet is formed from a strip of copper alloy which is flat on the interior surface and slightly convex on the exterior surface, giving a flattened D-shaped cross section. The band is of uniform width for the main part of the bracelet and widens to form a rounded snake’s head at the terminal. No extant decoration. This fragment comprises one terminal head with the beginnings of the bracelet band and is broken off about 70mm from the end. The fragment has been bent back on i…

The context of the two similar examples found at Bancroft villa, Buckinghamshire, also point towards this type of 'D' section bracelet being late Roman in date (see R. J. Williams and R.J. A fragment from a copper-alloy bracelet of late Roman date (c. 4th century AD). The artefact is sub-rectangular with a rectangle with rounded corners form in cross-section. In profile it forms a shallow curve. The bracelet is decorated unifacially using multiple motifs. Bracelets decorated using different motifs have been found in this country and on the continent (see for example Crummy (1983, 46; fig. 47), Swift (2000, 154; fig. 192)). This example has broken at the edge of a small field which is roughly square and bears a punched ring-and-dot motif. A slight constriction and a trans…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Flat-section, or Ribbon-strip, bracelet of late Roman date. The central decorative panel on the outer surface consists of six punched dots around a further punched dot. The surface of each dot contains several tiny punched incisions. Either side of this central panel is a series of closely-spaced longitudinal toothed lines. At each end of the piece, and separated by an undecorated section, is a similar section of toothed lines. Each end of the bracelet fragment has been rolled underneath to create a loop. Traces of iron corrosion exist within these loop…

A decorated strip of copper alloy; probably a fragment of late Roman copper alloy bracelet. The fragment measures 53mm from tip to tip, 4.6mm wide, and is of flat section (thickness 1.6mm). It weighs 2.4mm. It has a grainy green surface texture, and its outside is decorated with a central pair of lines of punched dots. The two ends have straight, broken edges, though whether this occurred in antiquity or is the result of recent plough damage is unclear.

A copper alloy penannular bracelet which is probably Roman in date. The bracelet is distorted but complete. It is 97.8mm long, 40.5mm wide and 5.6mm thick. It is circular in section and appears to be undecorated though it is corroded and pitted making it difficult to be certain. The terminals are solid cylinders with a thick discoidal collar and a dimple in the end. Sally Worrall comments that undecorated bracelets are very difficult to date as they were used throughout the Roman period (unpub. 2004). The bracelet has a dusty grey green patina and is solid.

The terminal is decorated with incised lines in a lozenge pattern. Next there are six grooves across the band, then twelve diagonally, before five across again. Cast and wrought copper alloy penanular (open) bracelet or armlet probably dating to the Roman period (100 - 400 AD). The bracelet is formed from a length of regular oval sectioned cast copper alloy bar, the section varies along the length from oval to D shaped. The bar has been bent into an irregular oval shape (broadly C shape in plan) to form the bracelet. The two terminals almost overlap closing the circlet. The bracelet measures 6.7mm width and is 5.9mm thick. The two terminals of the bracelet are formed from the two ends of the shaped bar, these have been flattened and are broadl…

A Roman copper alloy bracelet or armlet (late 3rd – 4th century). The bracelet is made from a strip of copper alloy trimmed to the right length and curved round to form the bracelet. On this example the shape is slightly distorted and one end is missing. On the one remaining complete end the corners of the strip have been trimmed to form a point and within the point is a circular perforation which is the eye for the hook and eye clasp. The front surface is decorated with the characteristic engraved patterns. This pattern comprises two horizontal grooves just below the perforatio…

Fragment of what was probably a Roman snake bracelet. The fragment is in the form of a copper alloy snake head, D-shaped in cross-section, oval in plan and with a hatched perimeter. The size of the head suggests that it is the terminal from a bracelet (for example Johns, 1997, p36, Type Bii) rather than a finger ring.

A cast copper alloy Roman bracelet. The bracelet is incomplete and now somewhat distorted in its shape. The frame is sub-oval in cross-section and decorated on the exterior only with repeated bands of transverse grooves separated by blocks of undecorated surface. At one break the frame flattens, widens and appears to be broken across a hole in the centre suggesting this was a hook & eye type bracelet. The bracelet is probably late Roman in date.

A copper alloy bracelet fragment dating to probably the Roman period. Approximately just under half of the bracelet remains consisting of one decorated terminals. The bracelet is circular in section and flattens only on the underside and the terminal. The surviving bracelet terminal is zoomorphic in design possibly resembling an angular dog or bears head. The head has a tapered flat ended snout and there is pitted decoration visible on the top of the animals head which could suggest the species of the animal depicted (leopard or jaguar). Below the head are two ridges which circumferen…

Similar bracelets were found in 4th century layers at Bancroft villa (see Williams and Zeepvat 1994: 303-4) and there are numerous examples recorded on the PAS database. The bracelet is parallel-sided, narrow and of thin section. The upper surface bears seven panels of decoration. In five of the panels the decoration comprises a single ring-and-dot punch mark; the remaining two panels each have a trianglular arrangement of smaller ring-and-dot marks. A curled length of flat copper alloy, possibly a bracelet. It is undecorated and has a dark green patina. It is 37.8mm in length, 30.3mm wide, and 4.9mm thick. In section, the bracelet is rectangular and is 5mm wide and 1.5mm thick. It weighs 5.09gm. The bracelet has a dark green patina which is glossy in places. This may be the remains of a silver coating. A possible Roman date is suggested due to the other finds from this area. Plain bracelets are known through the Roman period, though some have been excavated from late Roman contexts (Worrall, unpub, Iron Age and Roman finds).

Roman bracelet; fragment of cast copper alloy bracelet of probable early Roman date. The fragment consists of one terminal and a section of the band of what is likely to have been a penannular armlet. The terminal is of roughly oval cross section and is decorated with incised lines in a style similar to Crummy’s ‘bead imitative’ style. There is a single incised line around the end, then a section which is decorated with cross-hatched lines, then a double incised line, a small gap and a final single line. Copper alloy fragment of a Roman bracelet, dating from c.250- 410 AD. Around half remains. The bracelet has a flat rectangular section on the main part but the width reduces and the thickness increases towards the terminal. On the outside of the band there are irregular linear grooves as decoration running from side to side. The terminal is possibly meant to be zoomorphic as there are some grooves, possibly indicating a snakes head.

A copper-alloy bracelet/armlet of possible Roman date. Similar examples were found in excavations in Colchester (See Crummy 1983: 40). The bracelet is bent and incomplete. It is of D-shaped section, thin and narrow and tapers to a point at the intact end. At two points along the outer surface are raised ridges which probably represent casting flaws. The bracelet has little corrosion or patina. It measures 67.5mm long and 52mm wide. The weight is 3.09g.
