CURATOR'S REPORT Description of Object Roman silver finger ring fragment, consisting of two shoulders and the bezel - the whole of the bottom of the hoop is missing. Ovular swelling profile and flattened bezel. The ring is set with a dark stone intaglio, probably nicolo, with a very worn motif, possibly a seated figure facing left. The shoulders are decorated with lightly incised lines. The item has been heavily cleaned, and there on file marks on one end of the broken hoop.

Copper alloy possible finger ring fragment. Cast head of a snake devouring its own tail; broken at both ends. Versions of the Ouroubus serpent, symbolising eternity and other themes, are known at least from Classical Greek times, and persisted in pagan Norse and later traditions [including Kevin Leahy's favourite trouser belt]. The chunky casting and good patina of this example may indicate a Roman date, though from this region an Anglo-Scandinavian affinity cannot be ruled out. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400. Estimated internal diameter: 25mm, Length: 17.1mm, Band Width: 6.5…

Suggested date: Later Roman, 200-300. Diameter: 20.9mm, Thickness (bezel): 3.4mm, Weight: 10.71gms.

Copper-alloy finger-ring, possibly coated with white metal (silver or tin), set with dark blue glass. Thin sheet bezel with an open hoop with two tapered ends to allow for adjustment. An oval setting standing proud of the centre of the bezel retains a dark blue glass stone whose surface itself stands slightly proud of the setting. Incised lines define a square field around the oval setting; this area retains a slightly silvery tint, possibly showing the extent of a coating. Suggested date: Later Roman, 200-300 AD. Internal diameter (as found): 14.5mm, Width (at bezel): 11mm, Thickn…

Internal Diameter (estimated): 14mm, Height (at setting): 5.0mm, Width (band): 4.2mm, Thickness (band): 1.5mm, Weight: 1.34gms.

Roman silver finger-ring set with a dark blue to black glass or stone, much degraded. The ring is of 'keeled' type, the hoop semi-circular in section, which expands and swells to form triangular shoulders with raised mouldings. The flattened bezel is waisted in plan and set with an oval stone. The design is difficult to interpret but appears to show a figure seated right on a throne holding out an object in a raised hand. It might be a representation of Jupiter, but it is difficult to judge as it is so heavily worn. Discussion: for a parallel see Henig 2007, no. 5. Date: 3rd cen…
