A very worn and corroded 4th-century copper-alloy Roman nummus of Constantine II (as Caesar), 'BEATA TRANQUILLITAS', Trier mint (322-323 AD; Reece issue period 16; cf. R.I.C. 382/410).
This coin has been pierced, presumably for use as a jewellery item at a later date. Although this practice occurred in the Roman period it is most commonly documented as an early-medieval practice. The large piercing respects neither obverse nor reverse designs: it is at 3 o'clock on the obverse, at 9 o'clock on the reverse. The hole has abraded through the circumference.
