A complete, corroded Roman denarius of Petillius Capitolinus, dating to the Republican period (43 BC). This is a silver-washed contemporary copy of the original, with obvious copper alloy corrosion underneath the surface wash. Obv.: eagle standing right on thunderbolt, wings spread; legend illegible. Rev.: Hexastyle Capitoline temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus and statues lining temple cornice; no discernible mint or legend. Cf. Sear Vol. 1, No. 486.

SIGNIS RECEPTIS reverse type depicting an aquila l. and a standard r. flanking S P Q R arranged around the clipeus virtutis inscribed CL V. Spanish mint of Colonia Patricia. RIC I (rev.ed.), p.47, no.86a.
Measuring c.18mm in diameter and weighing 2.94g (45.4gn). The coin has die axis 7 and is distorted through being nail-punched from the obverse. It has some wear.

The coin is in fair condition, worn with 'nibbled' edges and deposits of verdigris especially on the obverse. This coin probably dates to 20BC-54AD. Ref. Coins of England and the UK, Spink 2009, page 48-50. The coin is 26.72mm long, 25.01mm wide, 2.63mm thick, diameter of 26.72mm and weighs 6.6g.
