Roman gem-set gold ornament, possibly part of a composite brooch.
The oval gold box setting, its upper edge lightly rubbed over the edge of the gem, has vertical sides and a flat base, with large oval central aperture revealing the flat back of the gem. A filigree beaded wire arcaded design runs round the side of the setting with an encircling filigree beaded wire at the base. Four tiny D-shaped flanged projections, symmetrically arranged one centrally on each side (one distorted), comprise a central dome-headed rivet encircled by the basal filigree beaded wire. At the back the base…

The object resembles a tag, handle or pendant. It consists of a straight shaft, oval in section, with a bulbous ovoid terminal at one end. The other end is formed into a bi-flanged socket, with the edges joined at the upper corners on one side by a strut, forming a circular perforation in this side. No corresponding strut joins the other corners and no damage is immediately perceptible. This end seems to have been intended for articulation or suspension.
X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicates that the metal is brass, an alloy of copper and zinc. No gold was detected.

An incomplete copper-alloy cast place which may have originally been a convex oval shape, however most of the outside edge is missing. On what appears to be the upper surface is a cast raised moulded coffee-bean shaped decoration created by an integrally cast oval having a very deeply incised groove running longitudinally across it effectively cutting it in half. When facing coffee-bean downwards the item appears slightly concave and at one end there is an integrally cast projecting stud the shank of which is circular in section, the shank terminates in a flattened head. The undersid…

Cast copper alloy cylindrical fitting. There is a small recess surrounded by a slight concentric moulding in the centre of the base. Three concentric mouldings at the other end give way to part of a narrower sub-rectangular sectioned projection, the end of which is missing. Surviving length 26mm, diameter 19mm. The date and function of the fitting are uncertain; however, its patination is consistent with a Roman date and the possibility that it is contemporary with the slide-key can not be dismissed.

Cast copper-alloy object of unknown date and function. Oval in section, it is 20 mm long and flares from 11 x 9 mm at the narrower end to 19.5 x 9 mm at the wider end. A central circular perforation runs all the way along the long axis, but is now blocked by iron corrosion (a magnet is slightly attracted). The wider end has a U-shaped cut-out in the centre; the 'shoulders' on either side are slightly expanded and cut into four angled facets. Although the object is very worn, hints of stamped or engraved decoration can be seen. On each of the larger faces, below the U-shaped cut-o…

Copper alloy fragment. A curved thick strip, thinner and perhaps not broken at one end. In section a rounded rectangle, 9mm by 4.5mm at the thicker end. On the outer face there are traces of punched ring and dot decoration (ring diam. c.2.5mm) - a group of one and two at the thinner end and probably another single close to the break. Surviving length 19mm. Function and date uncertain - possibly a bracelet fragment, but thicker than the common late Roman types. Probably Roman or early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon or Viking).
