A silver Roman coin; a denarius of the Republic (269BC - 30BC), Series 20 (119BC - 110BC). The moneyer signed the coin "Q METE" standing for Q Metellus. He is not easy to identify, but is believed to be a junior member of the Metelli family who were at the height of their power at the time. The coin is marked with an asterix; a monogram of XVI. This was added to denarii coins to show that they were worth 16 Asses. Previously they had been worth only 10 Asses.
