CURATOR'S REPORT Description of Object The silver head of a hair pin of the early Roman period. Silver hair-pin fragment in form of a human hand. The tips of the fingers are broken, leaving only the lower part of the fingers, defined by a series of rather crude incised grooves. The curved thumb in intact, as is the flat disc which separated the pin-head from the shaft. Only a small part of the iron shaft survives. Discussion Roman hair-pins in the form of a human hand are a well-known type. They are Cool's type 7 (1990:157-158), which …

Incomplete Roman silver pin of Cool's Group 2, sub-type A (knob-on-cordon head, spherical sub-type). There is an incised diagonal cross or saltire just off centre on the top of the pin head. It is 38.29mm long, the head has a diameter of 6.64mm and is 5.07mm thick. The shaft is 2.57mm in diameter, tapering to 2.29mm at the break. It weighs 2.22 grams. Pins of this form have been found in Roman contexts from the 1st to 4th century AD (Cool 1990, 154). The object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal and is over 300 years old. Consequently it qualifies as Treasure under the st…

An incomplete silver pin with globular head, undatable but probably of significant age. It is missing part of its shank. Measures 21.61mm in incomplete length and weighs 0.77g. The shank (roughly 13mm long and 1.32mm in diameter) has been bent and lost some of its surface around this area. The head extends out of the shank to a flattened top 4.37mm in diameter. Possibly Roman or Medieval in date.

An incomplete silver pin, the head and a fragment of the shaft survive, the rest of the shaft is now missing due to an old break. The head flattened biconical in shape and undecorated. The surviving shaft fragment is now worn but appears to have probably had a hexagonal cross-section originally. Although this pin is most likely to be more than 300 years old it is difficult to date precisely as pins with flattened biconical heads occur in the Roman, Middle Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods. Its probable hexagonal cross-sectioned shaft is also unusual, as a circular cross-…

A silver handmade pin, probably a hairpin, of either Roman or Anglo-Saxon date. The pin head is cuboid and the shaft of the pin is quite thick, tapering finally to a sharp end. The pin is bent and the surface has sustained minor damage, probably post-depositional in nature. It is missing its pin-end. The pin measures 42.2 mm long (with bend), approximately 60 mm long (original length without bend), 5.5 mm diameter at pin-head, 3.9 to 1.7 mm diameter pin shaft; the pin weighs 5.7 grams. The thickness of the shaft might argue for a Roman date rather than Anglo-Saxon.

A silver pin or stud. The upper half of the head is hemispherical; the lower half is flat-surfaced, its diameter decreasing towards the bottom. The head extends smoothly into the shaft, which is faceted and tapers to a sharp point. Dimensions: Length: 26.8 mm Maximum width (head): 5.6 mm Weight: 2.08 g. Discussion: A close parallel for this stud, albeit in copper alloy, is no. 3002 from Colchester, which was found in a layer dating from the mid 1st to late 3rd century AD (Crummy 1983: 115). This find qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act…

A white metal, silver, Roman pin weighing 2.98g. The pin head has a circular cross-section with a diameter of 7.4mm and height of 4.7mm. In profile the head is best described as sub-oval, the top and base being sub-conical to domed. The median part of the head has straighter convex sides giving the overall appearance of the head a partially flattened (through the centre) sphere (an undecorated flattened biconnical, or elliptical with slight point above and below, head). The shaft has a diameter of 2.8mm and extends out from the centre, of the base, of the pin head. The initial c.22.6m…

A silver Roman to Early-Medieval pin with biconical head. This artefact weighs 1.71g. The head has a sub-circular cross-section of 5.3mm diameter and a height of 6.0mm. The top of the head is has a rounded apex rather than terminating in a point. 1.4mm of the pin head's height is a straight sided mid section between the conical upper and lower hemispheres. Directly below the pin head, the circular sectioned pin shaft has a diameter of 1.4mm. The shaft continues in a straight line, from the centre of the base of the head, for a length of 11.5mm at which point it has a diameter of 2.0mm…

Dress-pin with bent and broken shaft, and conical head. From the photo, it appears that the head is decorated with radiating lines, possibly beaded. Although it was originally undated, the decoration suggests a Roman date; compare BH-82A289, HAMP-904A96, LIN-47B5D5, BH-326846, etc.

Description: An incomplete object comprising an iron shaft within a gilded silver cover. The cover is split along one side where the iron corrosion has burst through. The object has a domed top with a moulded collar, below which is a concentric row of punched annulets. Just before the break is a concentric row of punched annulets, now partially obscured by iron corrosion product. The shaft is moulded into a series of alternating ridges and grooves of varying thicknesses; it terminates in an old break. Description: Ring-shaped head from a silver proto-handpin. The head is oval, slightly wider than it is tall, and fairly flat, with both front and reverse slightly rounded, but the front more than the reverse. There is an oval perforation placed slightly above centre. The front has very well-executed decoration in two halves, an area of ribbing on the upper half and a sunken panel area of relief decoration on the lower half.  The ribbed area is covered with wider and narrower transverse ridges, which could also be described as beads separated by fillets. There are 13 of the b…

Proto-hand pin "with flattened ring head, its upper curve cast with bead-like swellings.; the lower area is flattened and decorated with red enamel, leaving a reserved pattern . Description: A silver pin of Roman or Early Medieval date, c. AD 43-850. The head comprises a flat globular sphere with no collar below. Extending from the base is a circular-sectioned shaft that gradually tapers to a rounded point. None of the surfaces are decorated. Measurements: Length: 24.7mm; head diameter: 6.1mm; shaft diameter: 2.4mm; weight: 1.85 grams. Discussion: The form of the pin broadly resembles types of both the Roman and the Anglo-Saxon (8th-9th centuries) periods. Such pins usually feature globular or ball-shaped heads, with c…
