ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURE CASE : 2016 T565.
Silver ring with thin, narrow hoop expanding to broad shoulders and a flat bezel, creating a D-shaped interior to the hoop. The bezel has a very slightly raised oval shape imitating an intaglio. The incised decoration on the oval depicts two small fish, both shown only with ventral fins, facing in opposite directions. SEM-EDS analysis indicates a silver content of 97.8%.

These coins were struck by Mark Antony in travelling mints for the use of his fleet and legions when he was preparing for the struggle with Octavius, which culminated in the Battle of Actium on the 2nd of September, 31 BC. The debased nature of this coinage meant that is remained in circulation for an extended period into the 3rd century AD so are most often found in very worn condition or with bankers…
