Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Roman silver finger-ring set with a dark blue to black glass or stone, much degraded. The ring is of 'keeled' type, the hoop semi-circular in section, which expands and swells to form triangular shoulders with raised mouldings. The flattened bezel is waisted in plan and set with an oval stone. The design is difficult to interpret but appears to show a figure seated right on a throne holding out an object in a raised hand. It might be a representation of Jupiter, but it is difficult to judge as it is so heavily worn.
Discussion: for a parallel see Henig 2007, no. 5.

Bezel of a Roman finger ring, probably of Henig Type 2. The oval bezel narrows at either end, where slightly thickened shoulders joined the band (now lost). The display face bears an irregular spiral patch of rough material, surrounded by whitish material . This probably represents the degraded remains of enamel, as this class of ring is frequently decorated with concentric patterns in enamel.
Early Roman, 100-200.
X-ray fluorescence analysis identified the metal of the finger-ring fragment as copper-alloy, with less than 1% precious metal.
