Lead probable weight. Cast waisted weight, resembling an exaggerated cotton reel form. This may have facilitated tied attachment, or movement along a guide or channel. Comparable weights accompany groups of Roman finds from Newbald Lodge, East Yorkshire, in the Foster Collection of metal detector finds held at the Hull and East Riding Museum. However, their function remains uncertain, and it is equally uncertain whether they form part of the Roman assemblage, or may derive from later activity centred on the 19th-century farm. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 36mm, Height:…

An incomplete cast lead alloy Roman steelyard weight. The slightly misshapen bi-conical weight has the remains of an iron suspension loop at the top and an iron shaft protruding from the base. The iron shaft is oval in section and has a length of 10.9mm, a width of 8.8mm and a thickness of 5.9mm. The surviving length of the weight is 41.0mm, the maximum diameter is 19.8mm and the weight is 45.95g.

Lead weight. A drum or cotton reel shaped weight: a solid cast cylindrical object with expanded and slightly convex ends. Patinated overall. The waisted form may have permitted a tied attachment. Similar weights among detector finds from the Yorkshire Wolds have been associated with finds of Roman date. Alternative and more recent uses might also be considered. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Diameter: 22.95mm, Height: 27.0mm, Weight: 83.38gms.

Lead Spindle whorl or weight. Penannular weight made by rolling a rectangular-section billet of cast lead around - presumably - a former, leaving central sub-circular hole (of diameter c.8.5mm). Patinated overall. One of two lead objects from this group of similar size and weight, just over one half imperial (British) ounce. Length: 22.64mm, Width: 21.13mm, Thickness: 7.35mm. Weight 16.3gms.

Lead Spindle whorl or weight. Cast circular flattened conical whorl or weight with an off-centre square-sided perforation (c.5.1mm square); the perforation has been formed by driving a square-section object - perhaps a nail - through the lead, as the metal is markedly lipped on one side. One of two lead objects from this group of similar size and weight, just over one half imperial (British) ounce. Diameter; c.19.5mm, Thickness: 7.12mm, weight: 16.9gms.

Lead weight. Cast object of waisted bobbin or cotton reel form, with two oval ends of length/diameter 30mm and 28.5mm with a constriction to a diameter of c.20mm between them. Heavily patinated and pitted by corrosion. The bobbin form and the slight inequality in the sizes of the ends are both features of a class of objects considered of possibly Roman date on account of their appearance along with Roman material reported from Newbald Lodge, East Riding of Yorkshire. Similar objects are known from Lincolnshire, with several recently reported. The constriction may have permitted tied a…

Lead weight. Cast plano-convex weight of crudely conical form with basal rim, probably made in an open mould, and with a central aperture tapering from diameter 3.6mm on the flat side to 2.2mm on the convex side. Lead weight. Cast weight of cotton reel or bobbin form, with the two ends of slightly unequal size: with diameters of circa 35mm and 34mm with a constriction to diameter 25mm between them. The form may be intended to permit a tied fastening in the waist of the object, or may facilitate a function requiring the weight to move, possibly in a channel like a sash weight. Objects of this form were reported along with predominantly Roman period material from Newbald Lodge, East Riding of Yorkshire, and further examples are occasionally reported. Suggested date: probably Roman, 43-410. …

Lead weight. Cast cylindrical or drum shaped object with flat ends of slightly unequal sizes with a slightly waisted body between them, resembling a cotton reel in its form. A pair of scratches may form a rough T on one end, though this may be adventitious damage. Patinated overall. Similar objects accompany Roman finds from various sites in northern Lincolnshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, though the function of these objects remains uncertain. Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with an erotic scene depicted in relief on one side. This involves two naked figures: a young man to the left and another party of indeterminate gender to the right. The young man crouches with knees flexed as he thrusts a long rod with a slightly swollen mid part into the rear of the other figure, who is bent over with flexed knee to receive it in the hindquarters; the latter participant may be looking back towards its companion, perhaps contributing to a pointed appearance of the head. One arm, the left, is crooked behind the figure's back, p…

Lead weight. Cast cylindrical weight. One flat surface bears the deeply stamped impression of a circle of diameter 5.4mm produced with a hollow-ended implement. A similar circle is stamped on the opposite flat face. Here it is accompanied by, and apparently cuts and hence post-dates, a series of four straight incised lines. Patinated overall. The mass of the object might suggest it to represent four Roman unciae or ounces (of 27.3gms), a value to which the surface markings may refer. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Diameter: 32.4mm, Thickness: 14.1mm, Weight: 112.41gms.

Lead possible weight. Cast object with a flat circular end with rounded edges, and a narrower cylindrical continuation whose end is raggedly textured. Patinated, dented and heavily abraded. This object resembles a series of bobbin or cotton-reel shaped objects of uncertain function. These are occasionally reported from northern Lincolnshire, and a group forming part of the Haldenby Collection held by the Hull and East Riding Museum also comes from Newbald Lodge, East Riding of Yorkshire, where they were associated with mainly Roman material. Copper alloy probable weight. Solid cast ovoid object, tapering to a point at one end and broken, possibly close to a slight expansion or perforation, at the other. Where undamaged, the object is lightly facetted, with chatter marks along them which may suggest trimming with a knife. The opposite side is grooved, probably as adventitious damage. This object may have served with a small steelyard, or possibly as a plumb bob; both uses would have entailed provision for suspension at the broken end. The mass is close to one half ounce in either the Roman or modern metrical systems. Sugge…
