Copper alloy Mount (as identified by finder). Cast sub-rectangular mount with a crudely moulded pointed terminal. A pair of backward pointing (relative to the terminal) rivets, each rising from a rectangular foot, are brazed to the back of the fitting, which is broken at its other end. If the curvature of the rivets relates to their fixing, they would suggest they engaged a strap or other object of 3.5mm thickness. Similar angled fixings occur on 3rd-century military metalwork, particularly scabbard fittings. Suggested date: late Roman, 200-400. Length: 41.1mm, Width/H…

Copper alloy with blue enamel Fitting. Cast pin with round section shank of diameter 4.7mm, expanded to form a rounded flat-topped head which bears a single circular panel of degraded blue enamel of diameter 5.5mm. The lower end of the shank appears to bear three bands of screw thread, though the nature and condition of the object, and in particular the enamel, argues against this being a recent object. Suggested date: Early Roman, 70-150. Length: 25.4mm, Diameter (head): 9.9mm, Weight: 4.46gms.

Copper alloy Inlay or Mount. Flat polished kite-shaped plate, with filed edges and a number of straight scratches apparently aligned with its longest edge. Possibly intended as inlay, as for furniture - an example of Roman furniture with angular insets of bone and shell was excavated at Shiptonthorpe, East Yorkshire. A fine patina extends across both surfaces and edges, arguing some antiquity for this piece. Suggested date: Roman, 40-400. Length: 22.85mm, Width: 14.32mm, Thickness: 1.64mm, Weight: 2.22gms.

Copper alloy Mount. Solid cast zoomorphic representation of the head of a pig with prominent ears, or a cow or bull with short horns. A dimple on the reverse appears likely to have served for attachment of the mount, though now retaining no trace of fixative. Smaller drilled hollows represent and/or emphasise the ears or ear holes, the eyes, and the end of the snout. Though interest in such animals is Celtic, this object was probably manufactured in the Romano-British tradition. Kevin Leahy kindly viewed this object and confirmed the identification presented above. Suggested d…

Copper alloy. Cast mount, with oval-sectioned tang for attachment to ?wood and expanded bolster, from which it continues as a curved projecting arm with a simply moulded terminal. This very small cast copper-alloy object is a most likely a Roman military mount. The object as a whole is tear-shaped in plan, formed of a band curving round at one end and terminating in a sub-oval lobe. Roughly a fifth of the way along the object (moving away from the lobe) are two fat, tear-shaped protrusions placed either side of the object, where the object begins to falre out to form the tear-shape, and positioned at roughly 45 degree angles from the main body of the object. There are a further two longer, narrower tear-shaped protrusions placed one on each side of the 'tear' r…
