Broad period: ROMAN

Copper alloy
Mount. Solid cast zoomorphic representation of the head of a pig with prominent ears, or a cow or bull with short horns. A dimple on the reverse appears likely to have served for attachment of the mount, though now retaining no trace of fixative. Smaller drilled hollows represent and/or emphasise the ears or ear holes, the eyes, and the end of the snout. Though interest in such animals is Celtic, this object was probably manufactured in the Romano-British tradition. Kevin Leahy kindly viewed this object and confirmed the identification presented above. Suggested d…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman vessel of a saucepan or officially a trulleus Most of the upper edge of the vessel is incomplete and only a third of the rim survives. The projecting rim has a thickness of 2.6mm and is flattened on the top and at a right angle to the vessel. Just underneath one end of the surviving rim, at the top of the vessel, is a copper alloy rivet. This would have secured a handle to the vessel, though this is now missing. The body of the vessel is undecorated, but there are traces of a white metal coating on the inside of the vessel, which is possibly tinning or…

Two body sherds, probably from a Roman coarse ware vessel. The hard fabric is dark grey on the exterior and the interior is light grey. The sherds have frequent angular dark inclusions and sparse clear grains possibly quartz. The fronts of the sherds have a panel of decoration consisting of a continuous looped or spiral line.
These sherds found in the Malton, North Yorks area probably represent examples of local later Roman coarsewares. Pottery supply to the Malton area most probably largely provisioned by local potters working in the neighbouring parish of Norton. Pottery from a t…

(Probably) Lead Alloy or (possibly) heavily leaded copper alloy.
Cast figurine, apparently representing a woman clasping three-fingered hands around her knees – other interpretations of the latter, including bread loaves, breasts or babies were considered. Overall, modelling is crude.
The face has prominent cheeks suggesting high cheekbones, prominent long eyebrows – if these do not represent the upper part of a veil (see below), elongated eyes and a flat nose. Hair with a central parting appears to be represented above the forehead, and a tress may fall on one side of the head â…

The top of the head has a crest moulding with an empty lozenge-shaped enamel cell. The actual headstud is missing and all that remains is a hollow circular socket. The surviving part of the incomplete bow is decorated with three vertical lozenge-shaped cells with blue enamel. The surviving len…

A cast copper alloy bust of the Roman God Jupiter. The lifelike oval face is three-dimensional and has clearly defined attributes of Jupiter. The hair is thick and curly, the eyebrows are bushy and the beard and long moustache are less defined but are still quite clear. The striking eyes have a hollow centre, which may have been filled with either enamel or another metal. The nose and lips are well defined. On the top of the bust is a central circular perforation with a diameter of 5.2mm. The flat back of the bust contains soldering marks, which would suggest that the bust was attached…
