A fragment of a copper-alloy military type harness strap fitting of 1st century date (see Bishop; 1988). A similar example is recorded on the PAS datbase - see BH-8B41A6. The damaged hinge section tapers gradually into a curved arm; a transverse ridge separates the two elements. At the narrow end of the arm is a t-shaped bar terminal. The object measures 30.2mm long, 11.9mm wide and up to 10.9mm high. The weight is 5.75g.

Object type: PIN
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small, incomplete copper-alloy pin or nail of probable Roman date. Similar artefacts have been found in Roman levels at Colchester (see N. Crummy; 1983; pp. 115). They are thought to have had a wide range of functions, but the smaller examples, such as this piece, may have been furniture fastenings. The roughly flattend bi-conical head has rounded edges and measures 7.3mm in diameter by 5.5mm high. The remaining portion of the shaft is of circular section. Overall, the pin is 12mm long and weighs 1.87g. It is slightly corroded.

Object type: BRACELET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy bracelet of Roman date. Excavations at Baldock, Hertfordshire, uncovered three similar bracelets from 3rd and 4th century contexts (see I.M. Stead and V. Rigby; 1986; pp. 125-128, nos. 175, 188, 192). The context of the two similar examples found at Bancroft villa, Buckinghamshire, also point towards this type of 'D' section bracelet being late Roman in date (see R. J. Williams and R.J. Zeepvat; 1994; pp. 303-307, nos. 67, 68). Approximately three quarters of the original artefact remain, although it appears to be slightly squashed. The maximum width of th…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy mount of probable Roman date. No parallel could be found for this piece; however, it is stylistically similar to Roman belt stiffeners (see, for example, M.C. Bishop and J.C.N. Coulston; 1993; pp. 174, nos. 3, 5 and 13). A similar mount, but with a crescentic hanging section, is recorded on the PAS datbase - see BH-1D40B5. The mount recorded here may also have originally had a crescentic protrusion. The piece consists of a sub-rectangular plate with, at each end, an inverted trapezoidal protrusion. There are two punched ring-and-dot marks, one at each end …

Object type: ARMLET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy tool of probable Roman date. No parallel could be found for this piece which appears to have been designed for piercing holes, possibly in leather. The form strongly suggests that it has been made from the terminal of a broken armlet or torc. For a complete example of such an object, see PAS record no. BH-905682. It is suggested that such bracelets and armlets are late Roman (3rd to 4th century) in date (see, for example, I.M. Stead and V. Rigby; 1986; pp. 125-128). The conversion from armlet to tool may have occurred during the Roman period or may be an Early-medieval m…
