A copper-alloy ring-shaped object of uncertain date and function.
The object, which appears to be of some antiquity, is possibly a finger-ring. At the back is a gap. The terminal which survives undamaged comes to a blunt point; the opposing terminal is of flatter section, wider and is broken off at the end. The width of the ring increases gradually towards the front. The upper surface is slightly convex and the inner surface is flat.
The artefact measures 17.7mm deep, 22.7mm wide, 9.5mm high. It weighs 4.6g.

A corroded and bent copper-alloy finger-ring of Roman date. The form of this piece is possibly representative of a snake. Snake-form jewellery was introduced into Britain in the 1st century AD (see C. Johns; 1996; pp. 44-47). It appears to have been most popular during the 1st to 2nd centuries; however, it is possible that more devolved examples, such as this piece, may be later in date.
The ring has been made from a strip of copper-alloy which has been bent into a circle, with one end overlapping the other. The uppermost terminal tapers gradually towards the narrow, squared off end…

CURATOR'S REPORT
Description of Object
Fragment of Roman silver finger ring of 'keeled' type. Probably 3rd century in date.
Only one shoulder, part of the hoop and the bezel survive. The shoulder is decorated with incised lines which run out to the edge, and the bezel consists of an octagonal moulding. This is inscribed 'DEO TOTA'. The shoulder is inscribed 'FELIX'.
Discussion
The legend on the bezel refers to the Celtic deity Toutatis. The missing shoulder would have almost certainly have had the inscription 'VTERE', which, when combined with 'FELIX' translates as 'use…

An incomplete copper-alloy finger-ring or flat-section bracelet of late Roman date. The dimensions of this piece suggests that it is more likely to be a finger-ring than a bracelet.
The artefact is bent and corroded. It has been made from a parallel-sided copper-alloy strip. The outer suface bears a central band of short, angled, parallel incisions. One of the two original terminals is bent inwards. It is incomplete and retains a portion of a circular aperture. The other terminal is entirely missing.
The object measures 21.4mm deep (from the terminals to the back of the hoop), 3.…

A corroded and bent copper-alloy artefact which is probably a Roman snake-form finger-ring. This identification is based largely on the fact that the overlapping terminals appear to be an original feature and not the result of damage. The terminals are also of differing thicknesses, which adds weight to this theory. Snake-form jewellery was introduced into Britain in the 1st century AD (see Johns, 1996, p. 44-47). It appears to have been most popular during the 1st to 2nd centuries, with more stylistically devolved pieces such as this possibly extending into the 3rd century.

A copper-alloy finger-ring of Roman date. Catherine Johns attributes this distinctive 'keeled' form of ring to the 3rd century AD (1996, p. 49). A parallel, from Wallington, Hertfordshire, is illustrated in the 2003 Treasure Annual Report (DCMS, p. 49, no. 45).
The bezel is oval in plan, flat and has a small circular recess at the centre. The shoulders are angular, with wide, flat surfaces and taper in width towards the hoop. The hoop is of D-shaped section and tapers towards the back. The surfaces of the ring have traces of a possible white-metal coating.
The ring measures 24.6m…

Date: 2nd century AD.
Description: An incomplete Roman silver finger-ring. The plain hoop increases in width and thickness from the back of the hoop towards the flattened bezel. The shoulders are slightly angular in appearance. At the centre of the bezel is an oval setting which is missing its inset but contains traces of a white paste-like substance. A small portion is missing from the back of the hoop, the damage having occurred in antiquity. The ring is scratched and corroded and has adhering copper corrosion.

The ring is of light construction. The bezel is oval in plan and contains a now-empty setting. The bezel tapers into the shoulders, which in turn taper into the hoop. The hoop is of D-shaped section, narrow and thin.
The artefact has a dark green patina and has slight damage to the hoop. It measures 18.3mm wide, 15.4mm deep (bezel to back of hoop) and 6.9mm thick (height of bezel). The weight is 0.71g.

A copper-alloy twisted wire finger-ring of probable early Roman date.
The ring has been made from a single length of low diameter wire. The hoop consists of a single strand, to form the shoulders the wire has been wound into tight spirals, while the bezel comprises a pair of interlaced loops. The rings is bent and corroded. It measures 21.3mm wide, 17.2mm deep (bezel to back of hoop) and 3.8mm high at the bezel. The weight is 1g.
A similar ring was found in excavations in Colchester (see Crummy 1983: p. 47/fig. 50, no. 1756), in a layer dating from AD c. 49 and c…

A copper-alloy pennanular finger-ring of probable Roman date.
The outer face of the ring has a pronounced ridge which extends around the centre. The outer edges are vertical and the inner face is flat. The terminals are slightly convex, the upper one overlapping the lower one by approximately 2mm. The ring appears to been slightly squashed. Its surfaces retain traces of a dark green patina but are otherwise heavily corroded. It measures 21.4mm wide, 19.5mm deep and 5.4mm high (width of band). It weighs 4.18g.
Dating of such a plain ring is problematic; however, similar exa…

A fragment of a Roman copper-alloy finger-ring.
The piece represents the bezel and part of the shoulders of the ring. The bezel takes the form of a raised oval plinth, the upper surface of which bears a crudely incised pattern of curves. The sides of the shoulders angle inwards to the points where they are broken off. An incised transverse groove separates the flat area at the base of the bezel from the shoulders; further such grooves also mark the outer edges of the shoulders. The surfaces of the ring have been tinned or silvered. The ring measures up to 16.1mm wide; the b…

A copper-alloy finger ring of probable Roman date.
The bezel is sub-oval in plan and bears traces of an incised or stamped design. The shoulders angle inwards, extending smoothly into the hoop, which is of thin section and roughly formed. The ring is slightly bent and is heavily corroded; however, patches of a light green patina remain. It measures 21.7mm wide, 20.4mm deep (bezel to back of hoop) and 9.3mm high at the bezel. The weight is 2.87g.
The form of this ring, with its incised bezel and angular shoulders, suggests a probable 3rd century date.

An incomplete copper-alloy finger ring, dating from the Late Roman period (cf. Henig in Woodward and Leach 1993: fig. 172, nos. 5, 6 and 9).
The bezel consists of an empty oval cell, the sides of which decrease in height at the ends. A groove separates the bezel from the one complete, albeit broken, shoulder, the sides of which converge towards the much narrower hoop. The fragment measures 21.4mm long, 10.3mm wide and weighs 2.03g.

An incomplete copper-alloy finger ring of Roman date.
The bezel is flat, oval in plan and has two circular cells, separated by a central gap, one retaining part of its red enamel setting. In addition to the settings, the surface of the bezel also bears at least three decorative black circular ornaments, all of which are located adjacent to the edge of the ring and have probably been achieved by silvering or tinning. The soulders taper sharply into the hoop, which is of thin section and is largely missing.
The artefact is heavily corroded. It measures 23.8mm wide,…
