An incomplete copper-alloy plate brooch of 2nd century AD date. Oval plate brooches of this period are relatively common finds in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. A similar brooch was found within the same Parish - see BH-86AC02. The brooch is oval in plan and has a raised central cell (also oval) with a double rim around its perimeter. The cell contains remnants of a green and red glass or enamel inset. Surrounding the cell is a shallow groove, whilst the outer edge of the brooch is marked by a low rim. Both of the aforementioned elements retain traces of gilding. The pin attachment…

An incomplete copper-alloy Dolphin type brooch of mid 1st century AD date (R. Hattatt; 1982; pp. 65). The wings measure 33.6mm wide and have four of decorative vertical grooves each side of the bow. The underside of the head is recessed. The remaining part of the axis bar is situated within a perforated central lug and retains six coils of the copper-alloy spring. A short length of the external chord (which would have secured the spring to the rest of the brooch) is located within a rearward lug on top of the head. The pin is missing. The high-arched bow extends above the height of …

The point of the pin is located just above the level of the foot of the brooch. The deeply curved bow is of semi-circular section and tapers gradually towards the foot. The upper surface of the bow has mould…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Rosette or Thistle type brooch of mid 1st century AD date (Hattatt 1982: 98). Approximately half of the short, humped bow remains - it has flat surfaces and is thin and wide. At the bottom, the bow gives way to the plate, which would originally have been sub-circular in plan. The upper surface of the plate has two raised rims, close to the outer edge. At the bottom of the reverse side of the plate is a vertical protrusion, which probably represents part of the catchplate or foot section. The piece measures 22.2mm long, 17.9mm wide and 6.9mm thick. The weig…

A heavily worn, corroded and incomplete copper-alloy Colchester type one-piece brooch of 1st century date (R. Hattatt; 1982; pp.60). The brooch appears to have been cast in one piece. The bow appears to have been deliberately bent to that it almost touches the narrow wings. The object measures 26.2mm long and 8.8mm wide. It weighs 4.2g.

An incomplete copper-alloy plate brooch of 2nd century AD date. The plate is oval in plan and has a low, flat rim around the outer edge. At the centre, a similar rim defines a slightly recessed oval cell, the base of which has been deliberately scored to act as a key for the now-missing inset. The outer ring is also missing its original infill. On the reverse, the pin attachment and catchplate are located at opposite ends of the brooch, on its longest axis. The pin attachment consists of a single rounded lug with a circular central hole. The catchplate is solid, has an angled inner…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Disc brooch of 2nd century date (see R. Hattatt; 2000; pp. 345). The brooch would originally have been circular with a series of peripheral lugs, only one of which survives intact. At the centre of the upper surface is a circular cell, defined by a raised rim. A series of semi-circular ridges around the outer edge (traces of four remain) would have created a star-like pattern. At the 'point' of one of the star's arms, the intact semi-circular lug protrudes from the outer edge of the plate. Traces of a second lug are visible at the adjacent star's point. …

An incomplete copper-alloy Dolphin type brooch of mid 1st century date (R. Hattatt; 1982; pp. 64-8). The fragment consists of the head and a section of the bow. The wings are horizontal, of circular section and have a vertically-aligned engraved ring at each end. A transverse hole passes from one end of the head to the other and would have held the axis bar. A narrow slot at the centre of the head's underside indicates the point at which the now-missing pin would have been hinged.
