An incomplete copper-alloy bracelet of Roman date. Excavations at Baldock, Hertfordshire, uncovered three similar bracelets from 3rd and 4th century contexts (see I.M. Stead and V. Rigby; 1986; pp. 125-128, nos. 175, 188, 192). The context of the two similar examples found at Bancroft villa, Buckinghamshire, also point towards this type of 'D' section bracelet being late Roman in date (see R. J. Williams and R.J. Zeepvat; 1994; pp. 303-307, nos. 67, 68). Approximately three quarters of the original artefact remain, although it appears to be slightly squashed. The maximum width of th…

A fragment of a copper-alloy flat-section or ribbon-strip bracelet, similar examples to which have been found in 4th century layers at Bancroft villa (R.J. Williams and R.J. Zeepvat; 1994; pp. 303-4). Only a small portion of the bracelet survives. At one end of the outer face is one complete cast ring with a central pellet; immediately adjacent is the remnant of a second such ring. The central portion of the upper surface is occupied by a band of closely-spaced incised vertical lines. The area at the right hand end is plan. The bracelet has a slight curvature consistent with its or…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Flat-section or Ribbon-strip bracelet of probable 4th century AD date (see R.J. Williams and R.J. Zeepvat; 1994; pp. 303-4). Only a small portion of the bracelet survives. The curvature is consistent with the object's original form. Four incised vertical lines are visible on the heavily corroded upper surface, creating five panels which may originally have contained further decoration. The inner face is plain. The piece measures 41.3mm long, 6.6mm wide and 2.2mm thick. The weight is 4.09g.

A fragment of a copper-alloy Flat-section, or Ribbon-strip, bracelet of late Roman date. The central decorative panel on the outer surface consists of six punched dots around a further punched dot. The surface of each dot contains several tiny punched incisions. Either side of this central panel is a series of closely-spaced longitudinal toothed lines. At each end of the piece, and separated by an undecorated section, is a similar section of toothed lines. Each end of the bracelet fragment has been rolled underneath to create a loop. Traces of iron corrosion exist within these loop…

A fragment of a late Roman copper-alloy bracelet. Similar bracelets/armlets, with a hook-and-eye fastening arrangement, were found in excavations in Colchester (see Crummy, 1983, p. 41-42). The bracelet is of thin section and gradually tapers in width, ending in a backward-facing hook. The majority of the upper surface is decorated with a longitudinal central groove bordered on either side by a line of parallel, angled grooves. At either end of this long panel is a much shorter panel (the one furthest from the terminal being incomplete) of incised vertical grooves and ridges. The un…

A fragment of a copper-alloy bracelet/armlet of Roman date. It is suggested that such bracelets and armlets date from the 3rd and 4th centuries AD (see, for example, Stead and Rigby, 1986, p. 125-8) The piece represents one of two original terminals from a pennaular type bracelet. It is of sub-oval section and terminates in a wider portion, decorated with three transverse ridges and grooves. The curvature of the piece suggests that the artefact would have been of a relatively large diameter. The surfaces are corroded and the break appears to have occurred in antiquity. The fragme…

The object measures 34.5mm long, 2.8mm wide and 1.4mm thick. The weight is 1.73g.

Similar bracelets were found in 4th century layers at Bancroft villa (see Williams and Zeepvat 1994: 303-4) and there are numerous examples recorded on the PAS database. The bracelet is parallel-sided, narrow and of thin section. The upper surface bears seven panels of decoration. In five of the panels the decoration comprises a single ring-and-dot punch mark; the remaining two panels each have a trianglular arrangement of smaller ring-and-dot marks. A copper-alloy bracelet/armlet of possible Roman date. Similar examples were found in excavations in Colchester (See Crummy 1983: 40). The bracelet is bent and incomplete. It is of D-shaped section, thin and narrow and tapers to a point at the intact end. At two points along the outer surface are raised ridges which probably represent casting flaws. The bracelet has little corrosion or patina. It measures 67.5mm long and 52mm wide. The weight is 3.09g.
