An abraded sherd of Roman samian pottery, probably a 2nd century AD Gaulish Dragendorff type 37 bowl. The main feature of this body sherd is the moulded decoration around the outside. The scene depicts a bull butting left; the forelegs of a second quadruped can be seen immediately above and the hind legs of a third animal (or possibly human arms?) lie to the left of the bull. In addition to the zoomorphic decoration, there is moulded grass along the bottom of the panel and, to the right of the bull, vine-like scroll. A ropework border marks the bottom of the panel and below this is …

An incomplete copper-alloy plate brooch of 2nd century AD date. Oval plate brooches of this period are relatively common finds in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire. A similar brooch was found within the same Parish - see BH-86AC02. The brooch is oval in plan and has a raised central cell (also oval) with a double rim around its perimeter. The cell contains remnants of a green and red glass or enamel inset. Surrounding the cell is a shallow groove, whilst the outer edge of the brooch is marked by a low rim. Both of the aforementioned elements retain traces of gilding. The pin attachment…

An incomplete copper-alloy Dolphin type brooch of mid 1st century AD date (R. Hattatt; 1982; pp. 65). The wings measure 33.6mm wide and have four of decorative vertical grooves each side of the bow. The underside of the head is recessed. The remaining part of the axis bar is situated within a perforated central lug and retains six coils of the copper-alloy spring. A short length of the external chord (which would have secured the spring to the rest of the brooch) is located within a rearward lug on top of the head. The pin is missing. The high-arched bow extends above the height of …

A fine example of a Roman seal-box lid. Lozengiform seal-boxes have been found in excavations at St. Albans, Hertfordshire (see M. Wheeler; 1936; fig. 45 and S. Frere; 1972; fig. 34). The excavated evidence from Verulamium and elsewhere strongly suggests they are a product of the 2nd century AD. The upper surface of the plate has a cast design surrounded by yellow enamel-filled recesses. At the centre of the design is an openwork lozenge which extends on either side into a fleur-de-lis style projection, and, above and below, into an openwork pointed leaf with a rounded central protr…
