Undecorated sherd of Samian type Roman pottery probably dating to the 2nd century AD (120 - 220 AD). The sherd consists of a small foot and fragment of side wall. It probably represents a small cup or dish. The fabric is hard and fine grained with mica limestone and black iron ore inclusions. The fabric is assessed by observation of recent fresh breaks. The slip / glaze is relatively thick and a mid brown red colour. Where the sherds have been abraded the slip has been removed to reveal the buff orange brown coloured fabric beneath. Rim sherd of a relatively thin walled unglazed coarseware pottery vessel. The sherd dates to the Roman period (50 - 410), however, not enough of the sherd survives to be certain of the form or size and without this a more specific date is difficult. The rim has a swollen outturned rim. The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub-angular quartz, grit and ironstone inclusions.
