A fragment of a Roman gold coin, probably a contemporary copy of a solidus of the House of Valentinian (AD 364-78) with garbled legends. The obverse appears to be OH VALE[ ] which is probably copying D N VALE[NS or NTINIANVS P F AVG] and the reverse is [ ]ITVOR[ ] which most likely copies RESTIVTOR REI PVBLICAE or similar, with and emperor standing, holding Victory on globe and standard. Gold solidus of Jovinus (411-13), RESTITVTOR REIP reverse type depiciting emperor draped, cuirassed, standing right, holding standard in right hand and Victory on globe in left hand; treading down a prostrate captive with left foot Mint of Triet Trier, RIC X, Trier no. 1704. Jovinus was a usurper (unofficial emperor) who reigned in Gaul from AD 411-413. The coin is in very good condition, with little or no wear, although there is a small split at the edge behind the Emperor's head.

Gold aureus of Vespasian (AD 69-79), struck in Antioch, AD 72-3. The reverse, IVSTITIA AVG is unpublished. RIC II, 2nd ed, p. 176, issue as of no. 1543. An aureus of this type is mentioned in BMC II, p. 75, no. *. This coin is published in the Revue Belge de Numismatique 1882, p. 403. However, this coin was from a large collection housed in Lyon which was largely melted down during the French Revolution, c. 1793.
