White [i.e. colourless] translucent bubble glass with a greenish tint and slight iridescence mainly on one side, possibly window glass. A thin [1.7mm] flat form with one straight made edge which is slightly curled or lipped during its manufacture might suggest this to be from a small pane from a window. The good condition tends to argue against a medieval date as the 'forest glass' of that period usually deteriorates to a darkened crumbly friable texture whereas this is solid, probably a soda glass made to a Roman recipe. Fine grained honey coloured Sandstone, possible whetstone fragment. Rectangular section fragment, possibly from a bar shaped workshop or kitchen whetstone - as distinct from hones worn or carried at the belt. All four sides appear smoothed, and one side may also be lightly dished. A break at one end is ancient damage inflicted before a prolonged period of immersion; the break at the other end is recent, exposing tiny quartz inclusions. Buff Coloured medium compacted Sandstone (non-specialist identification by MF). Whetstone. Tapered hone of square section, carefully shaped and smoothed by use on all four sides, chipped at its narrow end and broken at the other. Either point-sharpening grooves or, more likely, post-depositional damage, occurs on one flat face; one aris also bears damage post-dating use of the object. Fine grained Sandstone possible whetstone. Trapezoid straight-sided object of rectangular section, chipped at both ends and thickest at its wider end. The fine grained stone would lend itself to use as an improvised sharpener, and such mediocre honestones are most commonly reported from Roman contexts, though were also used before and after. Some doubt may be introduced by the tendency of some sedimentary stones to split neatly along bedding planes, as well as by other natural processes such as Aeolian sand-blasting, and by the lack of dishing from wear. Copper alloy wheel. Cast four-spoked 'wheel' - the object is actually square with rounded corners, of which one is lost .This recalls the wheel attribute associated with the Celtic deity Taranis or a sun-ray symbol, though this squared version also recalls the eccentric bicycle wheel designed by Hengist Pod in the film Carry on Cleo. One 'spoke' is slightly thinned, apparently by wear, so the object may conceivably have functioned as a strap distributor or union. John Creighton writes: Model Wheel. A Piece of openwork, comprising a circular wheel with four radiating spokes, two spiralling out clockwise, two spiralling out anti-clockwise; there are three other spokes which do not quite reach the edge of the circle, these all spiral out clockwise. At the centre is a hole, diameter 6.5mm, filled with a different kind of [ferrous] corrosion product. Possibly related to Romano-Celtic Wheel God artefacts recorded by Miranda Green – MF would also suggest possibility of a model cart. Diameter: 41mm, Thickness: 2.41mm, Weight: 9.7gms

An incomplete cast lead alloy Roman steelyard weight. The slightly misshapen bi-conical weight has the remains of an iron suspension loop at the top and an iron shaft protruding from the base. The iron shaft is oval in section and has a length of 10.9mm, a width of 8.8mm and a thickness of 5.9mm. The surviving length of the weight is 41.0mm, the maximum diameter is 19.8mm and the weight is 45.95g.
