A silver miniature votive axe of Roman date. Iron corrosion is concentrated on the base of the axe, suggesting that other features were once present. Dimensions: length: 36.7mm, width: 15.5mm, thickness: 7.7mm, weight: 8.62g Discussion: Although no other silver votive axes exist on the database, a silver votive dagger of Roman date (NMS-F2D1B2) was declared treasure (Treasure case tracking number: 2008T515). A number of copper-alloy axe heads have been catalogued; although these usually combine the head with a handle, they are sometimes socketed in a similar manner to this one; for …

This very small object is a fragment from a small silver vessel, of cup or bowl shape. In section there is a clear angle, suggesting a more or less vertical and decorated rim or upper body, and a carination below which the plain body tapers inwards. The decoration is a simply engraved series of pointed ovules, possibly alternating in direction. No trace of inlay can be seen. 22 x 16 x about 1mm; weight: 3.1g. X-ray fluorescence analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content of 98 per cent. The style of the decoration and the quality of the m…

Silver probable vessel mount. Cast plate with, described from the top, a sharply angled hook, now broken and perhaps originally engaging the rim of a vessel; a collar with seven vertically incised notches; an elongated concavo-convex plate with a vegetal scroll enclosing a field of tiny overlapping circular punch marks on the display face, hollowed behind, above a tapered flat-backed leg with a collared moulded and knopped foot or terminal. The object is curved in profile, a probably original feature perhaps exaggerated by subsequent bending.Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 40-400. In …

"An urn covered with a leather bag." "The leather immediately mouldered away on exposure to the atmosphere; and the silver urn, which glittered at the first disclosure to the air, assumed an earthy hue; or, as the boy himself expressed it 'all eazed [i.e. decayed] away together'. The Urn is said to have been broad like a bason with an ornamented circular edge turned downwards" According to C Johns probably a flanged bowl of a date as early as the 3rd century AD. [could also be pewter??] Leather bag

Silver vase or flask found to contain a Theodosian coin hoard (IARCH-E79EBA) Described as follows by Blyth 1836, 95 (quoted in Robertson 2000, 386): "It is a silver Roman ampulla, or bottle-shaped vessel, in good condition...Its weight is 8 oz. and its height 8 inches. It was found behind the plough by a labourer at Fincham, in September, 1801, and taken to Lynn, and sold as old metal to a silversmith, of whom Mr. Hankinson bought it." It is illustrated in this account; Robertson notes that "The fig. shows that the flask was pear-shaped, 8 in. high and 4 in. wide. It passed into t…

The two silver items are both fragmentary: Fragment 1: a small rectangular piece of hack-silver, cut from a silver vessel. All four edges have been cut, and there is a hesitant transverse cut running inside one of the longer edges. Both faces of the silver are plain, and the fragment is flat. Maximum length 14mm x width 9.1mm x thickness 2.6mm. Weight 2.27g. Fragment 2: small 'pie-slice' fragment from a circular lid or vessel rim, with a plain bevelled edge. CURATOR'S REPORT Description of find A distorted and fragmentary silver-gilt decorative mount of probable Roman date. The mount, probably a component of a composite object, appears to have been of flared octagonal form and seems to retain original upper and lower edges. There is an irregular W-shaped cut-out in one edge. The outer face has a symmetrical decor comprising a toothed band below each edge and two bands of running chevron with gilded ribbing between the bands. Discussion The damaged nature of the mount prevents a definitive identification or an unequivocal assignme…

Fragment of silver. This object appears to have been cut from a larger silver object, such as a dish or handle. On the upper surface there is a beaded borded and the beginnings of what looks like the neck from a bust, however the object is too large and thick to have been a coin. The reverse is completely blank, and there are very clear grooved linear marks on both faces showing that it has been cut or clipped on every side from a larger object. The style of the object appears to be Roman, however the object was found on a site producing much Anglo-Saxon material, and hence may act…

Fragment of silver, probably from the head of a hair-pin and probably of Roman date. The fragment is rectangular in section and consists of a series of mouldings: at the top is a wedge shaped moulding and below three rectangular block mouldings which narrow to a sub-circular button. Below this there is a break, presumably where the shaft of the pin would have started. There is also a possible further break on the top end of the fragment.

A unidentified base silver or pewter object of uncertain date. The object comprises a tongue-shaped plate which is broken at one end. At the other tapered end, there is a rectangular-section lug which is bent back on itself. The upper surface of the plate possesses marginal ribs and possesses moulded decoration. This comprises a panel of stylised vine scroll decoration, extending to a triangle filled with six dots. From the apex of the triangle, there extends a further rib, which separates the remainder of the plate into two panels. In each panel is a further dot. The underside of the…

An incomplete silver object of uncertain function, probably a decorative fitting although it is acknowledged that it resembles an early Roman armilla. The object comprises a flat rectangular strip. The margins of the strip are decorated with an outer band of larger globular mouldings and an inner band of small mouldings. The inner band is flanked by grooves. At one end, the object ends in a square terminal in which there are two triangular cut outs. At the other, the object is broken or cut diagonally. The underside of the object is plain, save for centrally-positioned small raised kn…
