Description: Fragment of a small gilded silver flat openwork mount, probably Roman in date, perhaps a rectangular fitting for belt or strap. It is sharply rectangular in cross-section, with parallel, straight sides and both ends broken. Two triangular apertures are present, along with one crescentic, and part of another. The reserved bars have a scrolly appearance, ending in roundels. No means of attachment has survived. One break is recent but the other is not, being covered in a ferrous deposit that has afflicted many metal objects on this site. Patches …

A small peltate silver mount. The simply moulded outer face is worn. The unworn inner face preserves two rivets, one retaining a tiny circular silver washer. The very short rivets indicate that the mount was secured to something very thin, perhaps to a thin-walled vessel.

2019 T1153 Description: A silver figurine in the form of a bird dating possibly to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The figurine depicts a duck on water. It has a rectangular body which is triangular in section. The head of the bird is pointed with very little detail except a line to separate it from the body and two indentations either side of the beak which represents eyes, however these appear quite worn now. The opposite end is squared with an integral recessed tail which is heart shaped. The top of the bird is decorated with several incised lines; there are 6 incised l…

Silver mount fragment. Cast concavo-convex arm with a collar and rounded knop at one end; broken at the other. The back is rough, possibly suggesting the object to have been cast in an open mould. There is a faintly phallic appearance to the object, though whether this impression would be enhanced or weakened were the object complete is uncertain. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. In view of the suspected age and material this object is to be subjected to the Treasure process, ref. 2017 T356. Length: 33.4mm, Width: 7.3mm, Thickness (at terminal knop): 3.8mm, Weight: 2.62gms

A silver Roman mount. Treasure case: 2016 T35 Silver horse-harness pendant, originally probably teardrop-shaped by now broken through the middle so missing its terminal. The pendant is composed of sheet silver that narrows to a strip of metal to form the hoop, folded over the back and riveted. Although the circular rivet survives, the hoop itself is broken through and missing. The surviving pendant is decorated with lines of punched dots that radiate out from the rivet and a central straight line. In addition there are triangles of punched dots on each shoulder. Discussion: such…

Report on potential Treasure for HM Coroner 2014 T439 Carnforth, Lancashire. Teardrop-shaped silver horse-harness pendant with spherical finial. The attachment is a loop of strip metal which expands slightly to its terminal. The obverse is decorated with a punched pellet floral design of four pairs of volutes in a stack all attached to a central stem. The reverse is undecorated. TREASURE CASE : 2013 T99. This Roman base silver denarius has been abraded flat on its reverse leaving just the obverse (front) displaying a beardless effigy of Caracalla as Augustus (thus dating to the joint reign of Severus and Caracalla, AD 198-209). It has been fitted within a silver mount decorated with eight evenly-spaced circumferential ribs. There does not seem to be any evidence as to whether it formed a brooch, pendant or ring bezel. Age and Metal Content The composition of Roman silver coinage produced about AD 200 was baser than had been produced in previous ce…

Small silver mount in the shape of an animal foot with prominent claws, probably a lion's paw. Above the foot is a small circular collar set below a short tapering spike, suggesting that the foot was attached to a wooden object, perhaps a small box or stand. Diana Friendship-Taylor has identified the metal as silver. The animal paw motif is extremely common on Roman artefacts, found for example on candelabra or lampstands, which usually have three feet, and on other small portable objects. Pompeii has many examples of the type in both copper-alloy and silver, for example on a large tr…

A Roman silver peltate mount, slightly damaged and distorted at one side. The ornamental design on the front face, incised in a 'rocked-tracer' technique, comprises a running chevron between perimeter lines. At the point of maximum expansion four of the triangular spaces are filled with a cross motif. The overall shape, though not function, mirrors that of the ornamental buckles, often elaborated with tinning and incised or inlaid designs, on Roman military sword belts of the 1st - 2nd century AD. There is no sign of solder on the rear face of the object nor of any other mode of att…

A fragment of silver, perhaps a mount or part of a bezel from a finger ring. The object is flat and now square with a small tab of cut silver prrojecting from the base. The other three sides are smooth and do not appear to be cut or damaged, however the soft metal may have become rounded over time in the soil thus masking any breaks or intentional cuts. The mount contains an openwork scene set within a narrow frame, however the majority of holes are now filled with corrosion. The scene depicts an eagle standing either side of a military standard. Both eagles are shown from behind st…

Description: A silver mount originally conical in shape now distorted and squashed with damage along the edges. The mount has a flattened rounded top and is hollow. Projecting from the centre of the hollow underside is a cylindrical silver shaft, the tip of which only just projects beyond the base of the mount. Discussion: This mount is undiagnostic in its form and has no decoration or other features to allow it to be dated with certainty, it could therefore conceivably be any date from the Roman period onwards.
