A worn and abraded rim sherd from a Roman mortarium, or mixing and grinding bowl (3rd to 4th century AD). The fabric is Oxfordshire red or white colour coated ware with micaceous inclusions; it has oxidised to an orange colour. In profile one can see that the rim curves out in a shallow arc to overhang itself slightly. There is a rounded 'V' shaped channel between the outcurving rim and the top of the body wall. The body has been broken below the outcurving rim; none of the ('tituration') grits included to aid grinding can be seen. The diameter of the complete mortarium would have bee…

A worn and abraded rim sherd from a Roman mortarium, or mixing and grinding bowl. The fragment is roughly quadrilateral in shape. The fabric is Oxfordshire white colour coated ware with a mid orange brown colour. The rim profile is sub-triangular. There are shallow ridges externally and a channel between the outcurving rim and the continuation of the body wall which incurves. On the internal surface some of the extra greensand ('tituration') grits included to aid grinding can be seen. The diameter of the complete mortarium would have been c. 300mm, based on the curvature of this sherd.

A worn rim sherd probably from a wheel-made Roman food preparation bowl, or mortarium. The fabric has an oxidised mid-orange hue with a greyer core. Insufficient of the internal surface survives to confirm that this is a mortarium through the presence of extra ('tituration') grits which were included to aid grinding. The heavy, slightly overhanging lip is typical of mortaria, however; it protrudes for up to 13.1mm and is up to 12.6mm thick. Above this the rim proper is decorated with a pair of circumeferential incisions. The shallow curvature of the rim suggests that the complete mort…

A worn rim sherd from a wheel-made Roman food preparation bowl, or mortarium, dating to the 2nd or 3rd centuries AD. The fabric has a pale orange hue with a greyer core. On the internal surface some of the extra ('tituration') grits included to aid grinding can be seen. The heavy overhanging rim is typical of mortaria; it is 26.2mm long and up to 16.8mm thick. The shallow curvature of the rim suggests that the complete mortarium would have been a vessel with a diameter of around 280mm at the ridge.
