A complete ceramic wheel made Roman New Forest fine ware indented beaker, which has been recently repaired in one of the indented areas. The beaker dates to the period AD 270-340. It has a light grey fabric with a fine sand temper which has been hard fired. There are oxidized orange patches on the interior where the glaze has not been properly applied. The surface has been slipped with a dark red-brown/purple slip with black areas. There are a few shiny areas on the glaze which are probably from when the beaker was reapired. The beaker is Fulford's (1975, 50, 52-3) Type 27, an inden…

A complete ceramic wheel made Roman New Forest fine ware indented beaker, reassembled from a main core and some separate sherds. It has an orange oxidised fabric with a fine sand temper which has been hard fired. The surface has been coated with a dark orange-brown slip. The beaker is Fulford's (1975, 50, 52-3) Type 27, an indented beaker with a tall straight body and it is possible that the beaker belongs to his second sub type with a sometimes quite prominent beaded rim (Type 27.11-12).
The rim is distinguished by an incised line and measures 79.25mm internally in diameter. It exp…

A base sherd from a wheel thrown slip decorated Roman beaker. The fabric in medium grey-brown with abundant, c. 30% fine to medium sand temper, and some possible micaceous inclusions. The surface is coated with a thin, very dark grey slip. The sherd is triangular, and from the outer edge of a circular base. The straightness of the breaks perhaps suggests a certain deliberateness involved. A groove 0.7mm deep runs around the circumference of the base, following the curve of the edge 7.6mm in. There is a similar but wider and deeper groove on the outer side of the vessel 7.5mm up from t…

A now sub-circular base sherd from a wheelmade Late Roman New Forest colour-coated fineware beaker (c. 270 - c. 400 AD). It has a light/mid-orange fabric which is highly fired. The surface was coated with a dark red-brown slip of which only small patches survive. The sherd is from the centre of a shallowly convex circular base with abraded breaks to the majority of the circumference; an original base diameter can be estimated at c. 40mm.
