In a generally corroded condition and incomplete. The unusual feature of this particular example is the rectangular or square head plate from which the circular trumpet head emanates. The head plate is incomplete but is assumed to have supported an integral head loop. At the back of the trumpet mouth are the corroded remains of what appears to be a hinge mechanism. At the junction of the bow and the leg is a large plain swelling or flattened bead. The bead is defined by a transverse groove above and below and does not extend around the back of the bow. Cast copper alloy Wirral type bow brooch, dating to the late 1st- 2nd century AD. The brooch is mostly complete. The pin is missing as is the very base of the foot and some of the catchplate. An incomplete Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4.a-b, flat wing ends type). The axial rod is intact and the pierced top of the pin through which the rod passes, to create a hinge, is present but the majority of the pin is missing. While the axial rod lies within a tubular crossbar half of this part is also missing along with both end caps (if there ever were any) and the rod is liable to slide out. Cast copper alloy bow of a Roman brooch. It is a dark green in colour with marked areas of deep pitting from decay. The bow comprises an arched triangular strip of copper alloy 11.66mm wide at the top end and narrowing progressively to 5.68mm at the foot end. The head has a very prominent arch to it but this straightens out about halfway along the length of the bow forming a shallow 'P' shaped profile.
