Complete Roman - Early Medieval lead alloy probable steelyard weight, c.AD 43-410. A cast conical lead weight with small hole through its centre. It is possible that the body of the weight was either cast in two stages or cast in an open mould. The sides are uneven and slightly damaged, either through use or deposition. A tall plano-convex form might appear on a Roman steelyard weight where the iron hook was withdrawn before deposition - there is no trace of rust staining. This weight is undecorated and has no maker's mark.

A lead alloy or pewter flanged dish of probable late Roman date. Description The dish is fragmented but is nearly a complete vessel. The plate has a circular base with a short wall which runs vertical from the base at an angle of approximately 80 degrees. The rim is horizontal, flat, and is turned downwards and folded onto the underside thus forming a shallow facet around the perimeter. The form of rim suggests this belongs to Peal type 4b (Peal 1967). The central part of the base is made from a circular sheet of lead alloy. This was either soldered to the rest of…

Lead steelyard weight of Roman date, c. AD 43-409. It is semi-circular in cross-section with one near-complete conical half tapering to a point at which lead has been formed and is turned over, probably originally to form a D-shaped loop which is now crushed. Some of this half is missing, with irregular incisions out of all side. This may only be half the weight with the other half is missing. Although the surface is heavily corroded, no ribbed decoration is discernible on the surface of the weight. The object has a light brown/cream colour with patches of darker grey. It is 26.26mm l…

There are a series of short radial scratches around one half of the lower hemisphere; the regularity suggests they may be intentional but it is unclear as to whether they represent lettering, numerals or abstract decoration.

Hollow cast naturalistically moulded head of a snake, rendered at life size, with a triangular top to its flat head, eyes protruding in lentoid sockets and a slightly upturned or smiling mouth. Two folds are modelled on the neck on one side. Patinated overall. The subject, with its chthonic and religious implications, would be apt to a Roman shrine, while – unlike cherubs and nymphs – would be less likely to figure in Neo-Classical garden statuary.
