Three ceramic tesserae. Small rough blocks, they are of off-white stone, possibly sandstone, two of which shows traces of red on the upper surfaces. The largest is 29.98 mm x 30.12 mm x 21.11 mm and the smallest is 23.32 mm x 26.24 mm x 22.45 mm. Such pieces (often together with blocks of tile) were used to make floors in Roman villas and other buildings. The coarse finish of these and their size mean that these would be used to make the plain borders around finer tesselated floor and mosaics and to floor passage ways etc.

A total of nine Roman tesserae with a combined total weight of 153.39g. 1) Six tesserae, one incomplete, that are roughly square in form and rectangular in section. They have extensive white encrustation probably as a result of mortar used to set the tesserae into the floor. They have a combined total weight of 92.58g. 2) Three similar tesserae but with darker red/grey upper surfaces, perhaps intended to represent a different colour, resultant from poor firing or exposure to high temperatures, or simply due to preservation in the ground. They have a combined total weight of 60.81g.

3 tesserae. These are small rough blocks, two are of red tile and one is of off-white limestone. The upper surfaces are worn. Sample dimensions 19 mm x 17.5 mm x 11 mm. Such pieces were used to make floors in Roman villas and other buildings. The small size of these mean that they are likely to have been to make finer tesselated floors and mosaics. Weight: 18 g

9 coarse limestone tesserae. These are small rough blocks of grey to off-white stone (probably Purbeck limestone). The upper surfaces are worn. The largest is 40 mm x 37 mm x 19 mm and the smallest is 26 mm x 23 mm x 19 mm. Such pieces (often together with blocks of tile) were used to make floors in Roman villas and other buildings. The coarse finish of these and their size mean that these would be used to make the plain borders around finer tesselated floor and mosaics and to floor passage ways etc. Weight: 270 g

Six large tesserae blocks. Roman.
Traces of lime plaster on the base. 5 are a grey, overfired ceramic, possibly a modified floor tile. One is lighter and is made up of a more sandy red fabric. The large size of the tesserae suggest that they were used on a low quality, low status floor meant for heavy footfall.
Largest - 30mm x 28mm x 20mm.
Smallest - 24mm x 24mm x 15mm.
Combined weight of 192.27g.

Twelve ceramic mosaic tiles (tesserae) recovered during a fieldwalking exercise on the site of a known Roman villa. The tiles are generally sub-square in shape and are of fairly uniform proportions, measuring between 24.3mm and 33.3mm in length and weighing between 12.72g and 27.05g. They are quite large and crudely made, suggesting that they did not come from a very fine mosaic. They are also all of the same mid-orange colour, adding further weight to the theory that the floor from which they originated was functional rather than decorative. It is probable that the tesserae were forme…
