The fabric is coarse with numerous small quartzite inclusions and one large dark grey porous (perhaps grog) inclusion. It is perhaps burnished. Jane Timby comments, 'The grey-ware [sherd] is less easy to identify as they are quite ubiquitous with many local industries. All can say is yes Roman - my instinct suggests it is earlier rather than later Roman with the neck cordon. From the photo is does not look to be either New Forest or Alice Holt grey ware' (pers. c…

A base sherd of Roman Samian ware, probably from a shallow bowl or dish. There is a damaged area to the underside with removal of both fabric and slip, posibly from the loss of the foot-ring. This gives a triangular cross-section, the other surface (the inside of the dish) being flat. The slip is a dark reddish-brown in colour and apparent on both faces. All breaks are old. The fabric is oxidised and sandy with micaceous inclusions. Samian ware was made on the continent (Gaul) during the AD 1st, 2nd and early 3rd centuries.
