SALVS PVBLICA reverse type depicting Salus, draped, seated left on throne, feeding out of patera in right hand snake coiled round altar and resting left arm on side of throne. cf. RIC IV.2, p. 84, no. 178d for the probable reverse type. The coin is 17.4mm diameter, 2.4mm thick and 3.48g in weight. The reverse legend is blundered and appears to read SALVS PSV[...](C?)S, which suggests that either the coin has been double struck with the SALVS legend appearing at both ends of…

A copper-alloy Roman as of Severus Alexander (AD 222-235), possibly a contemporary copy (limesfalsum), dating to the period c.AD 222-235 (Reece period 11). Reverse type probably depicting Victory right holding shield fixed on palm tree? Prototype of the mint of Rome. cf. RIC IV.2 no. 506 for the possible reverse type. The light weight and appearance of this coin might suggest it is a cast contemporary copy (limesfalsum) rather than a very worn official issue.

An unusual gold-plated (with foil) silver denarius of Severus Alexander (AD 221-35). The core of the forgery is probably a base metal denarius common of the time, which has been overlaid with a sheet of gold. The reverse of the coin clearly shows the folded over edges of the sheet, which do not extend far on the reverse side, leaving the centre of the coin exposed. The reason for this is unknown and no other examples are in the British Museum collections at the time of recording. Rather than trying to pass itself off as currency (It is obviously smaller than an aureus), it ma…
