A complete plated silver denarius (contemporary copy) of Severus Alexander (AD 221-35) dating to c. AD 224-227 (Reece Period 11). Prototype from mint of Rome. Reverse; PM TR P VI COS II P P, Emperor standing left togate, sacrificing over an altar. RIC IV, pt 2, p. 75, cf. no. 70. A small part of the coin has broken away at c. 10 o'clock on the reverse revealing what appears to be a copper-alloy core, which is supported by the low weight of this piece. It is therefore suggested that this particular denarius is a contemporary forgery rather than an official issue.
