Two silver denarii, both in relatively crisp condition. Apart from siliquae from the second half of the 4th century and nummi from the 330s onwards, no other Roman coins have so far been found in this field. This fact, combined with the closeness of these two coins to one another in date and condistion, makes it very likely that they went into the ground together, either as part of a purse loss or a larger, concealed hoard. Chopped portion of a copper alloy as or dupondius of Maximinus, obverse [...]INVS PIVS AVG, bust right, reverse V[...], Victory, weight 4.26g, AD235-8. The coin has clearly been deeply bitten by a blow from a chisel and then snapped. Whilst this might have been done in order to furnish a fractional coin, it is far more likely that it represents evidence for melting down cut aes (large bronze denominations) in order to produce the so-called barbarous radiates of the 270s and early 280s.
