Chopped portion of a copper alloy as or dupondius of Maximinus, obverse [...]INVS PIVS AVG, bust right, reverse V[...], Victory, weight 4.26g, AD235-8. The coin has clearly been deeply bitten by a blow from a chisel and then snapped. Whilst this might have been done in order to furnish a fractional coin, it is far more likely that it represents evidence for melting down cut aes (large bronze denominations) in order to produce the so-called barbarous radiates of the 270s and early 280s.
