MARTI PATRI CONSERVATORI reverse type, depicting nude Mars standing right, right hand holding a reversed spear and left hand holding shield resting on ground. Mint of Trier, mintmark 'S-A//PTR'. Reverse type uncertain figure with transverse sceptre left, probably Pax or Providentia. Mintmark S-[_]/ML, mint of London. Measurements: 21.03mm in diameter, 1.76mm thick and 2.54g in weight.

Fragment from the side of a Roman South Gaulish (La Graufesenque) industry Samian plate or bowl probably of form 18/31, dating to the late 1st century, AD 90-110 (Webster 1996:33-35). The fabric is medium hard fired, bright pinkish-red, non-micaceous, with fairly abundent very fine white inclusions. The surface slip is a dark red. The remaining section is part of the stongly curved upper part of the wall with a beaded rim. Just above the lower break there is a distinct carination to a more shallow angled side wall. Eleven sherds of Roman Savernake grog tempered coarseware dating to AD 43-300. One of the sherds is part of the base of a vessel, the other ten are all part of the walls of vessels. The fabric of all the sherds is unoxidised grey. The base sherd has a black coating and one of the other sherds has slightly oxidised surfaces. The sherds have micaceous inclusions as well as grog, flint and one fragment had organic material as the surface is pitted. The fragments weigh 140.56g.
