A ?complete copper-alloy late Roman to early medieval pin. Both the head and shaft are D-shaped in cross-section with the lower end of the shaft tapering into the shaft, which continues to taper to a rounded point at its tip. The outer face of the head is decorated with a faint groove across each outer corner, two raised transverse collars across its inner end and a double raised tongue shape at the point where it merges with the shaft. The latter decoration is very worn and it may have been more pronounced originally. Traces of a shiny dark green patina survives in places, but the maj…

An incomplete copper-alloy pin of probable Roman date. The shaft is circular in cross-section and tapers slightly towards a well-worn break at the lower end. It is bent into a slight curve in profile. The head consists of a small, globular knob, much small in diameter (c.2.50mm)  than the shaft. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded, but traces of a dark green patina can be seen in places.  Probably a Roman hairpin, although the head is very small and the stem seems unusually short. See an example from excavations in Colchester with a similar small, globular head (Cru…

A complete copper-alloy Roman pin. The pin has a simple knob-shaped head. The shaft is tapering, heavily corroded, but does not appear to have had a swelling in the centre. It is now bent round into a U-shape with an additional bend at the tip. The surface of the metal is corroded with most of the patina now missing. Cool (1990, fig.1, no.5) illustrates a very similar example, which also has a swollen shaft and belongs to her Group 1C (knob heads with spherical heads). Although she lists no precise parallels from dated contexts, Cool (ibid., 154) suggests that pins with…
