Description: A silver pin of Roman or Early Medieval date, c. AD 43-850. The head comprises a flat globular sphere with no collar below. Extending from the base is a circular-sectioned shaft that gradually tapers to a rounded point. None of the surfaces are decorated. Measurements: Length: 24.7mm; head diameter: 6.1mm; shaft diameter: 2.4mm; weight: 1.85 grams. Discussion: The form of the pin broadly resembles types of both the Roman and the Anglo-Saxon (8th-9th centuries) periods. Such pins usually feature globular or ball-shaped heads, with c…

A complete copper-alloy Roman pin dating to the period circa 50-150 AD. The head is spherical, set above a collar. The collar is followed by a constricted panel, underneath which a second collar sits before a thick knop forms. A final collar sits underneath the knop. From this projects a narrow, circular stem which tapers gently into a now blunted point. The stem is distorted and bent out of shape. It has a dark green patina. Its style is consistent with Cool's Group 8 'multiple hemisphere and cordon heads' group (1990: 160). It parallels Crummy's Type 2 (1983: pg. 29, no. 472) …

Copper-alloy pin of Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The pin is composed of the remains of a head (possibly globular). The base of this head is still visible and appears to have been circular in section. It is approx. 4.1mm in diameter. Below the break are three evenly spaced circumferential ridges. The diameter of these ridges is 6.9mm. Immediately below this is the shaft, which is six-sided closest to the ridges, but tapers downwards in thickness, where the edges also become softer, before becoming cylindrical at the terminal point. It is not known if this terminal is the original …

A fragment of a copper alloy pin or bracelet of probable Roman date. The terminal is an elongated conical shape and is decorated with approx. 12 ribs. Extending from the inner end of this is a section of circular cross-sectioned stem/hoop terminating in an abrupt break. There is a slight longitudinal groove/seam running the full length of one side. The narrow stem suggests that the object may be part of a pin or Roman or possibly early medieval date, although no precise parallels have been found for this function. Alternatively it may be part of a late Roman penannular bracelet. Se…
