Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Very worn vessel fragment dating from the Roman (possibly) period, i.e. c. AD43-410. It is a body sherd from an unglazed vessel made from orangey-reddish fabric that was sand/grit-tempered. The outside of the vessel was decorated with an ornamental grooved band which was attached to the vessel separately. Due to the thickness and sturdiness of this band it is possible that it was used as a handle, similar to salt-glazed pot handles of the early modern age.
