Thirty tesserae of Roman date. Overall weight: 658g. All the tesserae are made from tile and are all cuboid in form. These surface finds were found in association with Roman ceramic building material consisting of unclassified (Roman) tile, box-flue tile, tegulae and tesserae. These tesserae were discovered where the grassland had been disturbed during the very wet conditions at the 2008 Isle of Wight ‘Bestival’ musical event. The find-spot is very close to the site of Combley Roman Villa. Another 93 tesserae found 29/01/2009.

9 coarse limestone tesserae. These are small rough blocks of grey to off-white stone (probably Purbeck limestone). The upper surfaces are worn. The largest is 40 mm x 37 mm x 19 mm and the smallest is 26 mm x 23 mm x 19 mm. Such pieces (often together with blocks of tile) were used to make floors in Roman villas and other buildings. The coarse finish of these and their size mean that these would be used to make the plain borders around finer tesselated floor and mosaics and to floor passage ways etc. Weight: 270 g

3 tesserae. These are small rough blocks, two are of red tile and one is of off-white limestone. The upper surfaces are worn. Sample dimensions 19 mm x 17.5 mm x 11 mm. Such pieces were used to make floors in Roman villas and other buildings. The small size of these mean that they are likely to have been to make finer tesselated floors and mosaics. Weight: 18 g

A total of nine Roman tesserae with a combined total weight of 153.39g. 1) Six tesserae, one incomplete, that are roughly square in form and rectangular in section. They have extensive white encrustation probably as a result of mortar used to set the tesserae into the floor. They have a combined total weight of 92.58g. 2) Three similar tesserae but with darker red/grey upper surfaces, perhaps intended to represent a different colour, resultant from poor firing or exposure to high temperatures, or simply due to preservation in the ground. They have a combined total weight of 60.81g.
