Cordoned rim sherd from a large jar of Roman date (c. 100-300 AD) with a rolled rim and larger applied cordon, immediately beneath it, with a groove between to define the cordons. The sherd is a bright orangey colour throughout and the surfaces have been oxidised. The fabric contains mica, felspar and augite inclusions, which suggests that it is made from gabbroic clay, originating from the Lizard. The clay may have been made more iron-rich in order for the jar to look more like the terracotta colour of the Roman imports at the time. Romano-British in form. Carlyon (1987) illustrates …

A rim fragment of a wheelmade ceramic vessel. The rim is slightly bulbous and ‘n’ shaped in profile. The core and interior is a light grey and the exterior is a mottled grey/brown colour. The fabric has frequent, hard, angular, grey geological inclusions of varied size. The sherd weighs 14.48g. The fabric is probably Malvernian Ware dating to the 2nd to 4th centuries. Six sherds of samian ware pottery of early Roman date. Three are body sherds and three are rim sherds. Two of the rim sherds have external beads and one is plain. All the sherds are oxidised throughout with shiny brownish-orange slips. The fabric contains moderate very small limestone pieces and occasional voids, so the vessels were probably produced at one of the South Gaulish kilns. Total weight: 44g

A rim sherd of a Roman Samian Ware vessel. The rim is profile is a sub-‘n’ shape with the exterior of the rim leaning outwards slightly. The interior has a small horizontal cordon below the rim. In profile the wall of the vessel is only slightly convex on the exterior and concave on the interior. The broken edges of the sherd are quite fresh. It weighs 2.9g. The sherd is Samian Ware, suggesting the vessel is used as table ware rather than used for utilitarian purposes. The vessel was probably a bowl or dish. Nine sherds of South-East Dorset Black-Burnished Ware I pottery of Roman date. Five are rim sherds, three are body sherds and one is a base sherd. A ceramic mortarium rim sherd. The fabric is quite hard with a fine texture and is an off-white colour. The vessel has small rounded white and pink quartz coloured situation grits. The rim is damaged and the complete profile does not remain. The sherd is abraded and is only a fragment of the complete vessel. It weighs 37.6g. The fabric is probably an Oxfordshire white mortarium which dates to the 2nd to 4th centuries.
