Three ceramic tesserae. Small rough blocks, they are of off-white stone, possibly sandstone, two of which shows traces of red on the upper surfaces. The largest is 29.98 mm x 30.12 mm x 21.11 mm and the smallest is 23.32 mm x 26.24 mm x 22.45 mm. Such pieces (often together with blocks of tile) were used to make floors in Roman villas and other buildings. The coarse finish of these and their size mean that these would be used to make the plain borders around finer tesselated floor and mosaics and to floor passage ways etc.
