A fragment of a ceramic vessel of Roman date. The vessel is a base sherd from a shallow South Gaulish Samian Ware (terra sigillata) bowl or dish. The sherd is semi-circular with a projecting base ring. The fabric is smooth and hard with a pinkish-brown colour and a glossy red slip covering the entire surface. The breaks display conchoidal fracturing and abundant inclusions of fine limestone are present. A rouletted band runs round the interior floor of the pot with a central cartouche containing a partial maker's stamp. The only distinguishable letters remaining are 'OFCA[]'. Simil…

A rim sherd of Roman date (AD 150-350). Rounded, everted rim. The fabric is dark grey-black at the core with black-burnished surfaces. The fracture is irregular but quite smooth to the touch. The fabric includes a fine sand temper, with frequent large, angular calcite grits (1.0 - 3.5mm) ill-sorted in the matrix. Rounded black iron grits are sparse, and angular quartz grits are moderate to sparse. The rim form and burnishing are suggestive of the black-burnished ware types common in Roman Britain in the 2nd and 3rd Centuries, but the inclusion of large calcite grits as a major sourc…

A rim sherd of probable Roman date (AD 200-410). Plain, beaded rim of a straight-sided vessel. Medium-grey at the core, thinly oxidised to a pale brown at the surfaces. The surfaces are abraded. A clean sherd break was visible for identification purposes, but an abundant sand temper is evident and the fabric has been very hard-fired. This fabric is, perhaps, one of a number of grey-burnished wares known from the East-Yorkshire region and produced at several sites, and is thus a local product of the very localised grey-ware industry. Monaghan, J. 1997. Roman Pottery from York (Th…

A body sherd of a medium-grey ceramic of Roman date (AD 200-410). It is lightly burnished to a darker grey at the surfaces. The fabric includes abundant, well-sorted small (0.1 - 0.2mm) quartz grains, the larger of which are opaque and milky-white in colour. Sparse mica can also be seen in the fabric. The ceramic is hard-fired, with an irregular fracture and rough surface. This fabric is very similar to Holme-on-Spalding Moor Reduced Ware, one of a number of grey-burnished wares known from the East-Yorkshire region and produced at several sites, and is thus a local product of the very…

A fragment of a ceramic vessel of Roman date. The fragment is part of a rim from a fine, sandy coarseware with a dark grey/black fabric at the rim edge, lightening at the neck to a pale brown/grey. The rim is everted and ill-sorted inclusions are represented by fine quartz 0.1-0.3mm within a micaceous matrix. A small oval void is evident on the broken edge c.2.1mm length. The remnants of a thick, black slip are evident on the exterior of the neck below the rim. South-West Dorset Black Burnished Ware 1. AD 120 - 250. The sherd is 39.7mm long, 21mm wide, 8.1mm thick and weighs 9.3g. …
