An incomplete lead alloy steelyard weight of Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The weight is bi-conical in shape with the remains of an iron rod running through the centre and projecting slightly from the bottom and top. These projections would have formed at least one loop at one end for suspension with a knot to hold the weight in place at the other end. Although, there may have been two loops one at each apex, one for suspension and the other to hold a hook in which to hang the item being weighed. The surface is mostly smooth with sporadic pitting, particularly prominent at one end of …

Complete lead and iron steelyard weight of Roman date (c. 43 - 410 AD). The weight is crudely formed from a roughly bi-conical lump of lead that has been cast around a folded iron pin to form a loop at one end. The two ends of the iron pin project from the other end. The iron is red-brown in colour and the lead is light grey. Both components are rough in texture. The weight is 27.98mm in length, 21.87mm in width and 46.34g in weight.

A complete lead weight of uncertain date. The weight is conical with a circular base which tapers to flattened apex. A central perforation is present from the apex through to the base and retains organic material as a result of deposition. The exterior surface is decorated with irregularly spaced parallel striations. The metal has a light grey/cream patina and is worn. The weight is 1.2mm tall, 14.5mm in diameter and weighs 9.5g. Simple lead weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely. Therefore, due t…

An incomplete Roman lead steelyard weight, dating to the period c. AD 43-410. The weight is circular in cross section and bi-conical in plan. At its apex are the worn and corroded remains of an iron suspension loop, broken at the point it would have projected from the weight. It expands out towards its middle before narrowing again towards its lower terminus. There are the remains of a second iron suspension loop at this terminus, again broken at the point of projection from the weight and worn smooth. A series of grooves and nicks on its surface are probably a result of post depositi…
