A lead alloy or pewter flanged dish of probable late Roman date. Description The dish is fragmented but is nearly a complete vessel. The plate has a circular base with a short wall which runs vertical from the base at an angle of approximately 80 degrees. The rim is horizontal, flat, and is turned downwards and folded onto the underside thus forming a shallow facet around the perimeter. The form of rim suggests this belongs to Peal type 4b (Peal 1967). The central part of the base is made from a circular sheet of lead alloy. This was either soldered to the rest of…

A cast lead spindle whorl of lines and pellets design. possibly Walton Type C. probably medieval. The object is bi-conical and carinated, (has a ridge around the circumference). both faces are convex. It is worn but appears to have a moulded relief pellet and line design. The patina is cream. Walton Rogers suggested a change in design over time: the post-11th-century whorls became rounder in shape with no flat faces, and were either globular, spherical, or rounded bi-conical known as Type/Form C. However Standley suggests a period of the 13th to 15th century for this…

Object type: SEAL
Broad period: ROMAN

An irregular shaped piece of lead bearing the impression of a seal. The lead is roughly oval in plan with a flat base and rounded edges. The impression is oval, measuring 17mm x 14mm with a small oval impression at the top and the bottom each measuring 2mm x 2mm. These two oval impressions are most likely indentations made by the shoulders of the finger ring as it was pushed into the semi-molten lead. A ghost impression of the perimeter of the seal is visible on the reverse. The seal impression depicts a figure seated or kneeling left with right arm outstreched. The figure appears t…

The items are listed numerically below. Item 1. An irregular shaped lump of lead containing a late Roman nummus of the House of Theodosius, 'VICTORIA AVGGG' type. The lump is rougly rectangula…
