A lead alloy figurine representing an eagle. The eagle is looking to its' right with slightly splayed wings and a long tail. The feet are missing, and these appear to be recent breaks as the metal is shiny and has no patina, whereas the rest of the surface has developed a cream/brown patina. The reverse of the bird retains a lot of the feather detail, whereas the head, chest and legs are worn and has lost this detail. The reverse has traces of a black paint.

The head of the brooch survives to a width of 25.1mm. The wings are oval, with an open reverse and each wing terminating in a perforated oval wing cap. The wing caps expand outwards slightly towards the reverse. A fragment of the lower part of a Roman zoomorphic brooch probably dating to the 2nd century AD. Only the zoomorphic foot of the brooch and its catchplate survives.
The foot of the brooch is in the moulded design of an indeterminate species of bird. It is sub-triangular in cross section with a concave reverse. Looking at the front of the brooch its upper sides are slightly convex (11.7mm wide). They then narrow, at the neck of the animal to 7.1mm wide and become straight sided. In profile it is initially straight sided then bows out, at the same point it thins to a neck, slightly…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman decorated trumpet brooch, dating to circa AD 75 to 400.
The brooch is almost complete apart from the missing pin and spring mechanism. The brooch is an inverted 'L' shape in profile and the bow tapers from an oval head to a circular foot knop.
At the reverse of the head are the remains of a perforated lug that would have held the spring in place. The lug has a circular piercing.
At the reverse of the lower bow are the remains of the catch plate that extend from below the moulded collar to the point where the foot knop extends. The …

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy steelyard weight with a lead core in the form of a bust probably of the god Jupiter. The lower portion of the weight is lost to old damage such that only a fragment of the bust’s shoulders remain.
The surviving copper-alloy shell consists of an entire human head that is very well moulded providing a naturalistic representation of a male head. The head has oval depressions for eyes which appear to have slightly domed eyeballs within, suggesting no enamel was intended to fill these. Between these is a projecting triangular nose. Below this i…

The surviving part of the brooch is crescent shaped with patinated breaks along the upper edges and on the terminals. The front has been decorated with two different colours of enamel, in recessed cells. In the centre is a vertically orientated rectangle. This one is a light, almost white blue enamel. To either side are slightly curved rectangular panels, reflecting the edges of the brooch. These cells have r…

An incomplete cast copper alloy figurine, dating to the Roman period (c. 43-410 AD). The figurine is of high quality, but incomplete and worn, missing much of the finer surface detail and multiple limb elements. Both the arms are broken above the elbows, the left leg ends in a break above the knee while the right leg ends in a break just above the ankle.
The figurine is cast three-dimensionally and depicts a standing, young, male nude. The figurine is well modelled and executed in a classical style, with mostly realistic (if idealised) proportions. The head is turned slightly to the f…

An incomplete copper alloy Trumpet style brooch, of Roman (75 to 175 AD) dating.
Approximately 50% of the brooch is present, with the pin and spring missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The rest of the brooch is intact. The brooch has been bent just below the head at an acute angle, c. 45 degrees.
The head of the brooch is oval in plan, and tapers into the bow. The reverse of the head is concave. A vertical bar is present in the reverse of the head, with a circular hole for the axis bar (infilled with iron corrosion products). There is no evidence of a head loop or plate. Th…
