The slightly corroded head from a cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative brooch with a double pierced lug spring attachment. The bow curves through over ninety degrees and expands into the head which has the pair of perforations uppermost. The lower hole appears to retain the remnant of the iron axis bar, judging by the trace of orange corrosion product. The upper hole is now blocked with corrosion, but would have held the chord of the spring, both of which are now missing. The wings are situated internally above the lug. They are both small and stubby and triangular in shape, …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object: probably a harness fitting of Roman date. At one end there is a flattened circular terminal with a thick raised border on its upper surface. Within the border there is a further raised concentric circle with a raised central dot. Between the raised elements there are recesses which may once have been inlaid; there are possible traces of red enamel within the concentric circle. The sides and reverse of the terminal are slightly convex. A thick circular section shaft extends from the centre of the reverse of the terminal. The shaft extends for c. 1…

Incomplete copper alloy and enamel Roman plate brooch of the equal-ended type with a hinged mechanism, missing its pin shank and most of the enamel. It measures 34mm in length and is max.11.2mm wide. It weighs 2.15g. Both hinge mechanism and catchplate are slightly bent to one side, possibly as a result of being trodden on in ancient times.
At the centre of the bow is a 11.2x12.6mm square, a double rib around a central sunken area 7.6x7.6mm. This has a small amount of white enamel remaining.
Above, the bow extends dropping in a slight curve, behind which is the hinge mechanism, a…

Complete copper alloy and enamel Roman zoomorphic brooch in the form of a duck. It is 31.7mm in length (from beak to tail) and max.12.3mm wide (at its breast). It weighs 4.21g.
The body itself is rather flat and does not stand very high, max.2.6mm. It is occupied by four fields of enamel, representing the wings and back (to the tail). The outer two fields (wings) are filled with a blue enamel, the inner two (back/ tail) a white enamel. These fields are an elongated tear-drop shape, one pair being inverted compared to the other.

A worn fragment from a cast copper-alloy Roman bow brooch, possibly a 1st-century Hod Hill type. The fragment consists of the leg and lower part of the bow. The surviving bow fragment is flat and rectangular (L.: 8.6mm, W.: 5.37mm, Th.: 2.4mm). It is decorated on its upper surface by three longitudinal grooves creating two internal ridges with a ridge bordering on either side. The leg slopes down to a small terminal knob. The leg itself is very slender and tapers from the bow to a width of only 1.7mm before the terminal. It is bevelled on both sides so that it is triangular in cross-…

A worn cast copper-alloy fragment from a Roman Disc-and-Trumpet brooch. The flared trumpet head survives, as does the upper section of the bow. The head is sub-circular with a protrusion at the terminal, probably a broken loop. The edge is flattened. The semi-circular perforated lugs on the lower surface are very abraded; the axis bar and pin are missing. Below the head the bow constricts to a width of 4.75mm. It then expands into a central discoidal element with the remnants of four side protrusions arranged in saltire. This element too has a flattened border, within which is a rais…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Roman copper alloy pelta-shaped mount with residue of solder on the reverse. It is D-shaped in section (being flat on the underside) and measures 31.2x22.7x2.6mm and weighs 6.71g.
The central 'arm' is bifurcated. The outer arms are apparantly rounded, one more so than the other which is rather more pointed.
All original patina has been lost and the metal is a greeny/ grey colour.
Pelta shaped mounts are associated with the military and can be given a 4th century date.
